“Don’t call me up” is certainly the perfect group of words I would tell that guy that wouldn’t just stop calling after an irreconcilable relationship that led to a break up. But would I break my phone because of home? Na na na na; Nop!
Come to think of it, she only smashed her landline, why did she not smash her GSM also? I mean she did not want any more calls from her ex, na na na na #Winks
Take a gander at the lyrics below before the main review.

LYRICS TO THE SONG “DON’T CALL ME BY MABEL MC VEY
VERSE 1
When I’m underneath the bright lights

When I’m tryna have a good time

‘Cause I’m good now you aint mine; na na na na Don’t call me up

When you’re looking at my photos

Getting hot, losing control

You want me more now I let go; na na na na

PRE CHORUS
I’m over you and I don’t need your lies no more

‘Cause the truth is, without you boy, I am stronger

And I know it’s sad that I changed to have a cold heart

But it was your game that has caused you- uuuuh I’m over you
CHORUS
Don’t call me up, I am going out tonight.

Feeling good now that you’re out of my life

Don’t wanna talk about us, gotta leave it behind

One drink and you are out of my mind

Now, now take it up. Baby, I’m on a high

You’re alone, going out of your mind

But I’m here out in the club and I don’t wanna talk So don’t call me up

VERSE 2
‘Cause I’m here looking fine babe

And I got eyes looking my way

And everybody’s on my vibe, babe; na, na, na, na Don’t call me up

My friends said you were a bad man

I should have listened to them back then

And now you tryna hit me up again; na, na, na, na

PRE CHORUS
I’m over you and I don’t need your lies no more

‘Cause the truth is, without you boy, I am stronger

And I know it’s sad that I changed to have a cold heart

But it was your game that has caused you- uuuuh I’m over you
CHORUS
Don’t call me up, I am going out tonight

Feeling good now that you’re out of my life

Don’t wanna talk about us, gotta leave it behind

One drink and you are out of my mind

Now, now take it up. Baby, I’m on a high

You’re alone, going out of your mind

But I’m here out in the club and I don’t wanna talk So don’t call me up

INTERLUDE

THE REVIEW
The “Babe O” that her boyfriend at the beginning of the song called out has really got my attention; I don’t know why though.
Lyrically, the song comes in two verses made up of 7 lines each. The chorus and pre chorus was done three times each. The lyrics are in English. They are well written and organized. Each line is dependent on the next line to make a full meaning. The lyrics flowed perfectly with the beat.
The song has meaning. It is about the artiste- Mabel who is not ready to go back to her dishonest boyfriend even though he wants her back and keeps calling her phones.
The lyrics are interesting and the line “Don’t call me up” is catchy.
However, I am wondering why she used the word “Underneath the bright light.” The word underneath means “Below” while bright light according to Google means doing a lot of enjoyable and exciting things; to be happy or successful. The word “underneath” before the “bright light” makes it look like she is far from being happy after the breakup even though the entire song makes one understand that she is having fun and she is better after the breakup.
Song arrangement– Verse 1-Pre Chorus- Chorus- Verse 2- Pre Chorus- Chorus- Verse 3- Pre Chorus- Chorus

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG
In the verse 1, “When I am underneath the bright lights, when I am tryna have a good time…” Mabel is so relieved that she and her boyfriend are no longer together. However, her boyfriend wants her back so he keeps calling her phone. But she orders him not to call her up because she is over him and she is trying to have immense fun and get her freak on.
She further says anytime her ex looks at her picture and he finds her so sexually attractive that his heart suddenly aches for her and longs to be with, her, he should not call her up.
In the Pre Chorus, “I’m over you and I don’t need your lies no more…” The artiste says she can’t take any more of her ex’s deceit. Without any form of regret, she says she has no feelings for her ex-boyfriend anymore. She blames her ex for her current emotionless and unfriendly attitude towards him. She says she is better off now that he is out of her life.
In the chorus, “Don’t call me up, I am going out tonight…” the artiste is so relieved that she and her boyfriend are no longer together. She lets him know that he is not relevant to her again and that she is much better without him. All she wants to do is party and celebrate the fact that he is out of her life. She is no longer interested in discussing about him or their past relationship. She says she is the one still soaring after their split while the guy is all alone and going crazy all in his attempt to get her back into his life which is futile.
In the verse 2, “’Cause I’m here looking fine babe. And I got eyes looking my way” to show that he is replaceable effortlessly, the artiste first of all taunts her ex boyfriend with her beautiful looks and lets him know that a lot of people are staring at her in a desiring manner. Her boyfriend is trying to have her back but she is not interested in him anymore. She however regrets not listening to her friends when they warned her against her relationship with him.

WHAT IS THE SONG “DON’T CALL ME UP” BY MABEL ABOUT?
The song basically talks about Mabel’s relationship with a certain guy who told her a lot of lies and took her for granted. The two split afterwards. However, the guy realizing that she is indeed a treasure not to be thrown away desires to have her back in his life, but it was too late as Mabel no longer had feelings for him. She is relieved that he is out of her life and says she is better off without him. Her ex boyfriend makes countless efforts to reach her through her phones but all is abortive because she never picks.
Or we can just say the song is about turning down any form of reconciliation with a dishonest and irresponsible ex boyfriend after a break up.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS
Bright light– According to Google “If someone talks about the bright lights, they are referring to life in a big city where you can do a lot of exciting things and be successful.
Underneath- Something below
Hot– To be leading or attractive in a sexual way
Over you: In relationship context, it means you are not into someone again or you no longer have feelings/emotions for the person; you have gotten over them.
Cold heart: Being cruel, stony or emotionless
On a high: Doing well, rising, on top, superior.
Out of one’s mind– To be insane, distressed or mentally unstable.

LOCATION
The video has both indoor and outdoor scenes. There are scenes from the Parking lot, shower and the sitting room.
COSTUME
Simple! There is really nothing extraordinary about their outfit. They were mostly casually dressed.
SOUND
Is it my ears or something? It kind of has this similar beat with Ed Sheran’s “Shape of you” especially the chorus part of the song. The song is however melodious! Her lyrics flowed well with the rhythm. She was also unswerving with the style of rhythm. Her vocals are interesting to the ears but at some point it was not clear. I love the piano beat. The various instrumentals used blended well and enhanced the beauty of the song.
VIDEO PRODUCTION
The video features Mabel and four other girls that acted like her female guards. The video partly complements the track; the constant call by her ex boyfriend and her refusal to pick his call scenes tally with the track. However her expressions all through the video do not show that she is truly over him. At some point, her expressions were babyish.
I noticed that the girls tried to use dance and body gestures to pass across the message but that that their dance is so outdated; they could have brought something new and added to the old steps. Infact the way they danced reminds me of my secondary school days
Mabel’s group of girls were in towels of four different colours; orange, purple, yellow and blue. The lady in blue towel was just being over expressive. The visuals are okay though; at least there was no sunshine that hit their faces.

JUST WONDERING

  • Mabel’s squad still entered the bathroom with her; was that really necessary?
  • That lady in “blue towel”, her expression was more than that of the singer’s; it was more like the song was about her
SONG DURATION: 3 minutes 14 seconds
