I totally love everything about this song; the beat and the expressions of all those that featured in the video, especially those remonstrating. Those people were all grief filled during the remonstration to show their displeasure about the deplorable state of the country which had been worsened by the constant attack by Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda and ISIS; the world’s most deadly terrorist groups. Also, the leaders of different countries are not left out, rather than take care of the masses and their needs, they loot public funds.

I wonder why I barely hear this well composed song on radio or see it constantly played on television. Some of these on air personalities don’t like to play this kind of better song but when it comes to songs like “Give it to me, take it, lick it, throw it and its likes”, they will play it every day. Or better still they have added this “Heal the world” to their Sunday playlist? Well, your guess is as good as mine.

THE REVIEW

I love the intro; it comes with a nice slow beat and visual that will make you curious to find out what is happening and what will happen next. Though, from crowd, one can tell what the song is about even if the person mutes the song.

LYRICALLY the song is obviously meaningful. It is heartwarming. It comes in two verses. Patoranking sang the chorus three times. He sang both in English and pidgin, but mostly in English. Most of the lines of the verses were interrelated.

WHAT DOES THE SONG “HEAL THE WORLD” BY PATORANKING MEAN

The song is self explanatory; the chorus explains it all “Spread love and heal the world
Heal the world, let love fill the world”

Hence, the song “Heal the world’ by Patoranking preaches the need for people to show love rather than hatred or keep grudges with one another which is essential for peace to reign in the country and also the ultimate solution to crisis in the world. According to the artiste, when love fills the world, the world would be automatically healed from all crises. When there is love, people won’t wish others bad or keep malice with people or kill people or destroy their property. The artiste goes further to show that war is costly while peace is priceless.

Indeed, to fight any form of war, you need to buy a weapon/weapons; even if it is as small as a knife, and at the end, people are killed and property destroyed.

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the verse 1, “Girls fighting over Gemini and pisces, every corner it’s war and crisis” Patoranking seems to believe that girls are more particular about their zodiac signs (something not relevant compared to war) despite the crisis all over, the killing of thousands of humans and the destruction of property by Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda and ISIS. He goes on to say that the inhumane acts done by the Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda and ISIS overshadows the beautiful past events of Africa. Their constant attack makes people nervy and he prays that God will make the citizens victorious.

In the verse 2, “Sickness is the status upon her DP now, her mother dying of BP now”, the artiste elaborates what people go through when there is war. He also talks about what citizens do if there is so much poverty in the country as a result of politicians’ looting. According to him, if politicians don’t fulfill their promises and citizens are suffering, the ladies in a bid to survive go into prostitution while the boys start stealing. In the long or short run, the former will be infected while the latter will be arrested or killed right on spot by the uniformed men if they try to abscond. He also says that too many grudges and harboring evil thoughts against others wont help heal the world.

In the Pre Chorus, “Take a look round the city now, no love oh what ah pity now” the artist says there is no more love in the city but hatred which is fast consuming the world. He also says those who ought to take care of the citizens with the immense resources on ground are instead stealing the money. At times these people don’t even use it to take care of their own, but spend on girls that can gratify their sexual libido; they use the resources for their selfish interest. Rather than spend the money on things that will develop the economy, they had rather use it to seek sexual pleasure and other irrelevant things at the expense of the suffering of the mass

From this line, “21 look like 50 now, hatred make things shitty now” one can tell that the artiste is trying to point out the repercussion of crisis. Constant killing and destruction of property will bring about financial shortage and scantiness of people in the land. Hence, people that are young and do not have money to take care of themselves will look older. Or better still, when there is war, it would affect both the rich and the poor, it would tell on their faces.

In the chorus, “So heal the world, heal the world, spread love and heal the world “ the artiste preaches love to all, and says rather than smear hatred that end up causing war, they should spread love that will make peace reign in the world. He says when there is love, the world would be healed.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Gemini is one of the 12 Zodiac signs; is the 3rd sign of the zodiac to be precise. They are people born between May 21st and June 20th. People believe that Geminis’ are sociable, understanding, loving amongst others.

Pisces- is the twelfth sign of the zodiac; the final sign if the zodiac to be precise. They are people born between the month February 19th and March 20th. People believe that Pisces are honest, altruistic, bighearted, compassionate and can adapt to any situation around them.

Mystery-Something strange, unexplainable, difficult to understand.

Jittery– Nervy; nervous; Shitty– very bad, horrible; Hatred– Strong dislike

Heal– Reconcile, cure, saved, get better; Snitching– To steal; Looting: To steal

SOUND: Very tuneful, memorable and original. He was expressive as he sang the lyrics. His vocal was dynamic and his backup singers couldn’t have been better, though the expression of some of them looked like they were feeling sleepy. His lyrics flowed well with the rhythm. He was also unswerving with the style of rhythm. The various instrumentals used (piano, guitar, shakers, tambourine) blended well and enhanced the beauty of the song. It emphasized the mood of the song. The different instruments combined to perform the song made the song interesting to the ears. I love the piano interludes

LOCATION

It was shot mostly outdoor where people gathered to protest. The only indoor scene was where Patoranking’s backup singers stayed.

COSTUME

Those remonstrating wore more of casuals. Patoranking at some point wore casuals but when he stood with the mass choir, he wore Adireat (I think that is what the fabric is called though, but if you think otherwise, kindly use the comment box), also the pianoist. The backup singers on the other hand wore suit (for the guys) and a jacket with a camisole (for the ladies); black and white in colour

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Terrific. The video concept! The images compliment the lyrics of the song. The vandalized cars, the scanty city, the whole place in disarray can all be linked to the aftermath of crisis. All those that featured in the video were very expressive and their faces registered sadness. They were chanting change. They have had enough of war and wanted peace in the country.  Interesting visuals to watch.

JUST WONDERING

This water that Patoranking picked from the floor and gave to the young chap; ( view at the 1:03 minutes of the video) though he was trying to show care, but I don’t quite agree with that scene. Why should you just pick any kind of water and hand it to a child to drink if it is not his own.

  • Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda and ISIS, how come the poor people are the nicest? Is he trying to say that the ladies are less concerned or not conscious about the crisis?
  • Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda and ISIS, how come the poor people are the nicest? Really, poor people are the nicest, that was then, some poor people are now becoming so bitchy.
  • Heal the world, but we don’t get to see various flags of different countries
  • Some of those backup singers did not show vitality as they sang, it looked like they were feeling sleepy

Remark– Great song in totality.

(+LYRICS+TRANSLATION) MUSIC REVIEW: CHILD OF THE WORLD BY FALZ THE BAHD GUY “WHY DID FALZ DO HIS EYES LIKE THIS NA?”

(+LYRICS+TRANSLATION) MUSIC REVIEW: CHILD OF THE WORLD BY FALZ THE BAHD GUY “WHY DID FALZ DO HIS EYES LIKE THIS NA?”

Interestingly, the song “Child of the world” by Falz the bahd guy was released in 2017 but this was not accompanied with a visual. However, the artiste has now released the visual to the 2017 song that has reflective lyrics.

I really like this song because it brings to fore that HIV/AIDS is still out there even though people have suddenly become mum about it or they are now careless about who or what they sleep with. The awareness seems to have overtime been relegated to the background. Some years back, people feared HIV/AIDS a lot. For one, two or some reasons, people no longer fear HIV/AIDS (If you ask me, I really don’t know why. May be  the thing don hold them for body that they had rather take a risk for a 5/10/20/30 minutes or 1 hour enjoyment or 1 day enjoyment (since some people are sex maniacs), than stay alive).

Some people especially guys are even ready to get down with you without condom, so shameless! This is the kind of song on-air personalities should play regularly, but they wont; I guess you know the kind of songs they love to play…

THE REVIEW

First of all, I love the fact that the director of the visuals “Kemi Adetiba” put the names of the major cast “Toyin Abraham and Bamike Bam Bam Oluwunmi” on the screen, terrific! Though, we don’t know uncle Peter’s real name…

LYRICALLY, the song tells a story; all the lines are perfectly interrelated. Very inspiring! The lyrics are deep and original, never ever used by any Nigerian musician. There are three verses in the song while the pre-chorus and chorus were done twice. The song flowed well; lyric wise and rhythm wise. The opening scene is also atmospheric as it explains the nature of the song and has the capacity to make viewers curious as to why the lady intends to commit suicide.

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the verse 1, “Apple of her mother’s eye, she be trophy daughter. Mummy raised her” the artiste talked about a woman Mama Sola (Toyin Abraham) who was saddled with the task of raising her daughter- Sola (Bamike Bam Bam Oluwunmi) alone after the man that impregnated her absconded. Mama Sola raised Shola in a godly way and she loved her daughter so much. Intelligent Sola graduated with a first class from Law at the University of Lagos. While on intern at her Uncle’s company, her uncle raped her; which made her lose her virginity in a cruel way. Also, she became wild and went into prostitution.

The pre-chorus, “Am I a fool? Shey I don go astray? Am I a victim of my circumstance?” is a sequel to the Verse 1. Here, the artiste said the “once used to be good girl” Sola has now allowed the rape incident determine and dictate her lifestyle. After she was raped, she saw it as a tangible motive to start prostituting.

However, the artiste asked people that are victims of circumstances a question; if they have become foolish and gone astray because of the harm beyond their control that was inflicted upon them.

In the chorus, “Oh oh oh, oh oh oh, I be Child of the world, I don become a child of the world” the artiste said that if you allow circumstances around you or the harm inflicted upon you intentionally or intentionally control your life negatively, then you have become a child of the world; immoral just like the case of Sola.

In the Verse 2, “She don dey look for that thing she dey resist before; she never had a daddy figure so she need the luck” the artiste said Shola had always had sexual urge but fought it, but after the rape, she became sexually uncontrollable. She started making a lot of money and was more into sugar daddies; politicians. The more sugar daddies she slept with, the more her money, likewise the more she was exposed to sexual diseases. She and her friends turned prostitution into full time business and named it Aristo Plc and she was a stakeholder in the business. She terminated a lot of pregnancies. She continued in her sexual escapade until one day, she was diagnosed of HIV/AIDS. This made her attempt suicide.

During the intermission, the artiste encouraged people who have been raped or have encountered any hurtful situation to voice out rather than commit suicide, since it was not their fault.

In the verse 3, “She promised not to disappoint, I guess she broke her vow”, the artiste said Shola wanted to commit suicide after she learnt she had HIV. However, she had a change of heart and decided to tell people about the disease and then advice them to stay away from sexual immorality so that they do not end up like her. She was able to surmount depression, redeem herself and then go back to apologize to her mummy for being out of touch.

WHAT DOES THE SONG “CHILD OF THE WORLD” BY FALZ THE BAHD GUY MEAN?

Generally when the word “Worldly“ is used, it connotes that one is fascinated by the things of the world; in essence the person is materialistic or ungodly or fleshly, all which may end up at the destruction of one’s soul depending on how the person goes about it. It is more like seeking wild pleasure at the expense of one’s life.

So “Child of the world” may mean a person that does all manner of immoral things for cash just to survive in the world.

In the context of the this song, child of the world is about a girl that went astray after she was raped. She was a victim of a circumstance that was beyond her control and made the circumstance control her lifestyle by living wayward. She was living a wayward life because of what happened to her; she became a victim of circumstance.

THE MEANING OF SOME WORDS IN THE SONG

They let the harsh or plight circumstance mold their life, reasoning, decision….

SOUND– Melodious! Very interesting to the ears! Falz was expressive as he sang the vocals. He was consistent with the style of rhythm. His lyrics flowed well with the lyric. The drum beat also enhanced the rhythm.

LOCATION– The video was shot both indoor and outdoor. Indoor (the building were Shola and mum lived, where she was raped and carried out her prostitution business. Also the hospitals where she terminated various pregnancies and the studio where the drummers were in).

Outdoor (Where Shola attempted jumping off the bridge in a bid to commit suicide and where she was creating awareness about HIV)

COSTUME– Ankara, Aso-oke, lace , graduation attire, short gowns, suit; fair .

VIDEO PRODUCTION– The video definitely tells a story. I love the way Shola shrugged when she returned to her mum. Toyin Abraham interpreted her role well without any comic expression this time; terrific. Falz plus all those that featured in the video were very expressive and made the video interesting to watch. The hospital scene looked so real. The visuals reflected the lyrics of the song; interesting visuals to watch I must say. The lightning however was dim.

THE STORY IN THE VIDEO

Mama Shola (Toyin Abraham) single handedly raised her daughter Shola (Bamike bam bam Olawunmi) after her man absconded. She raised her child in a Godly way. Shola was not only Godly but intelligent as well. After her graduation at the University of Lagos, Law Faculty, she went to intern with her uncle at a law firm in order to have some money as well as gain experience before going to law school. During internship, her uncle raped her and this made her go astray. She went into prostitution. Sex became her profession and she aborted so many pregnancies. One day, she was diagnosed of HIV/ AIDS and this made her sad. She wanted to end her life by jumping off the bridge but had a change of heart. She then decided to sensitize people that may have encountered what she encountered or are into prostitution so that they don’t make the same mistake she made and end up with regrets.

JUST WONDERING

  • They did not need to remain that rice and drink so that viewers can see that there was a celebration going on and they indeed ate, it looked childish haba. There should have just been one or two plates with remnants, not all the plates.
  • “One late night became wild in the sitting room” Wait, uncle Peter no get family ni
  • Mama Shola still has the same red nails from Shola’s graduation till Shola finished doing all her runs. I know someone would say she likes the colour…
  • Why did Falz do his eyes like this na…

REMARK: A great song done with so much professionalism. The lyrics are not too complex and can be easily understood. The instruments were well arranged and suit the mood of the song

(Follow Ogefash on IG @ ogefash_july Twitter @ogemama @Ogefash)

“Issokay, If you are not with me, you are lagging behind” What a very catchy line! Perhaps the reason, I maneuvered its entrance into our music video catalogue in order for it to be reviewed this week. Like seriously, it has never happened before that a song released within a week or two, should be reviewed on Ogefash Blog. I mean, there are a lot of music videos already in the catalogue.  But that is by the way, so let us see what Mama Africa aka that Igbo- Yoruba  girl aka Yemi Eberechukwu Alade; you know na, just call her Yemi Alade for short, has to pass across in this her new song titled “Issokay”. Feel the lyrics first

THE REVIEW

I was happy when I saw the duration of this song; this is the shortest music video ever reviewed on Ogefash blog. So, I thought because the song lasted for 2 minutes 30 seconds, the lyrics would be clear, but that was not the case. It was really tough understanding what message she was trying to pass across. The only line that was clear and easy to grasp was “If you are not with me, you are lagging behind”

So, I am like, if you are not with her on what exactly? Perhaps what the artiste was trying to say is that if you are not dancing to her music the way she and others are dancing to it, then you are lagging behind. Any other idea? Kindly fill in the comment box

Moving on, if that is what the song is about, then I would say the lyrics are poor; so weedy! The verses say nothing concrete; quite empty

She has an idea, but the idea was not properly put down which makes the song confusing and complex to understand. The only catchy line “if you are not with me, you are lagging behind”, may be the only thing that listeners really grasp in the song, which is not too good for a song with great beat..

Lyrically, the song comes in two short verses and two pre-choruses and three choruses. A lot of disjointed lines; the lyrics don’t flow well.

For instance, she said “As the gbedu enter, the people start to dance (Make way); my people start to dance. Carry dey go, e dey the plans. So make you give me chance” choruses

Give you a chance for what?

Then her next line was what almost scattered my brain…“Money oh, money oh! Money sweet oh, we dey make am…” no correlation with the song in entirety.  Perhaps, she was just fascinated with the beat (which I must say, it is really nice) and then jumped on the beat without an idea of what to say. If you ask, it is lyrically lagging behind.
Hey, that reminds me, enough of the criticism, I actually love her pitch in the 1 minute 8 seconds of the song. I also love the fact the song is not too long unlike the music videos we have nowadays. The song lasted for 2 minutes 30 seconds; did you exclaim? Don’t worry, it is allowed

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the Verse 1, “No be say I be novice. You can’t say you don’t know this, ah”, the artiste said she is not a newbie/learner in the music industry. She also said releasing a new song that people will dance to has nothing to do with the consecutive past hits an artiste released but how interesting and dance-able the new song is. She said if you are feeling her vibe, you can dance to it, like she is dancing to it; hence you are with her and not lagging behind.

In the Pre-chorus/ Chorus, “Okay, behind. Issokay, behind. Bumper, bumper, behind” the artiste said if you are not on the same page with her, if you don’t understand her flow, then you are lagging behind.

In the Verse 2 “As the gbedu enter, the people start to dance (Make way)” the artiste said people are dancing to her music which automatically means they are with her. She said people should give her a chance to keep releasing great songs that they can dance to. She also said she is making money, enough to run the town.

WHAT DOES THE SONG “ISSOKAY” BY YEMI ALADE MEAN

Issokay is a word gotten from the word “It is Okay”. In the context of the song, Issokay means you are permitted or allowed to do what you want to do. But whatever you do, if it is not in line with what the artiste is doing or promoting, then you are not with her, which means you are lagging behind.

However, I don’t know what she wants viewers to be with her on in order to be on the same pace with her; is it her dance flow, or her song, or the money she is making or something else; it is really not clear.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Lagging behind– Not on the same pace with someone, behind other, unable to catch up with others, slower pace

Ok– To allow something to happen, an approval, permission, you don’t mind about something, it is fine with you.

Vibe it– A way of relaxing and enjoying yourself either through music, dance, clubbing…

Novice– Someone who inexperienced in a particular thing, a learner

Back to back– Consecutively, in a row, never ending, continuous, interruption

Sabi- To know or understand something

In a row– If something happens non stop a number of times without a break.

Run the town– she is in control no matter what anyone else has to say about what she is doing- the solution, have authority over something, to be in control

With me-in their company, as a companion or friend or a s a member of a group, to understand what they are trying to say.

Bumper to bumper– When something is bumper to bumper, there is space for little or no movement, so the thing would be behind; moving slowly

Give me A chance– an opportunity to do something

VIDEO PRODUCTION

I like the video; basically dance. I like the vitality displayed by all the dancers. They were actually having fun while dancing. I also like the last scene of the video where Yemi Alade and the little boy danced. They had this hilarious dance step. Good video!

SOUND

Terrific! Very catchy as well. The combination of various instruments made the song interesting to the ears. I could really feel one of the major instruments played in music which is the drum; which enhanced the rhythm. It also has this humorous tune feel.

COSTUME

Fair! The ladies wore mostly bum shorts and matched it with tops of various patterns. Yemi Alade wore a black camisole with an Ankara jacket and a bum short.

 LOCATION

It was shot outdoor

 REMARK

Yemi Alade was not able to expound in the verses, in the whole song, what exactly she meant by “if you are not with me, you are lagging behind” because really, we don’t know what she wants people to be with her in… But great tune though
