ADVERT REVIEW- “CANOE DETERGENT” “BUT I SAW A FADED CLOTH ON THE CLOTHES-LINE!”

ADVERT REVIEW- CANOE DETERGENT “BUT I SAW A FADED CLOTH ON THE CLOTHES-LINE”

So, I saw this advert (Not a new advert though) and I immediately fell in love with it basically because the ladies were so lively and made the advert interesting to watch. Their dialogue was clear enough and comprehensible. They were also shimmering with joy. They were quite expressive. They were really keen about the “Canoe” detergent  they were advertising.

THE ADVERT

At the beginning of the advert, “Lady A” picks one of her cloths from the clothes-line. She is happy that it smells good after washing it with Canoe detergent. (Here, the Lady should have picked up the Canoe detergent and then nod her head as a sign of the detergent’s work)

Next, Lady A wears the same cloth she picked from the clothes-line to hang out with her friends Lady B and Lady C in the restaurant. Lady A’s friends are excited to see her. Lady A’s friends are quick to recognize the cloth she is wearing as their graduation apparel. They are however perplexed to see Lady A’s cloth still looking new as their graduation cloths have faded. One of lady A’s friends brings out her phone and shows her two other friends their graduation picture. Lady A tells them that the reason her graduation cloth is still looking new is because she used only “Canoe” detergent to wash it.

MESSAGE

With Canoe detergent, you need not fear that your beautiful colored or plain attire will lose its original colour because the detergent surely doesn’t make cloths fade, but rather, makes coloured fabrics brighter for long.

THE REVIEW

I love the fact that the three ladies they used were all so jazzy. They were nice-looking, articulate and also full of life; they indeed made the advert interesting to watch.

At the beginning of the advert, I expected more. The cloth that Lady A picked from the clothes-line had a good scent; in essence, there was already a solution to a certain problem. Solution to what problem you may ask?  Canoe detergent did not only wash well, but it also left her cloth with a good scent. What I expected? That Lady A would pick Canoe detergent or look towards where it was placed and then nod her head as a sign of agreement of what it truly does to cloths.

Then I wonder why phones were so scarce in the advert that they had to use the same phone for the two friends in the advert. Though tried to differentiate it by using pouch for one but it was still obvious. View this @ the 22 seconds and the 9 seconds of the advert.

Meanwhile that their graduation fabric has the same colour with canoe detergent, perhaps, the fabric was specially made for the makers of Canoe; haba couldn’t they have picked a finer fabric from Da Viva?

Ehen, haba, did they not notice that one of the clothes on the clothes-line was faded or what. View here oo, so it wont be as if this my eyes are deceiving me….

JUST WONDERING

Is this fabric specially made for Canoe detergent makers  because that is the only dominant material in the advert

What kind of Baba sala clothes did they put on the clothes-line na

They could have placed the Canoe detergent and bar soap on a better surface, this looks somehow. It would have enhanced the beauty of their products.

Aren’t there better attractive fabrics or what from Da Viva?

But this particular cloth looks faded

IMG_20181017_085316

REMARK:  Interesting advert to watch though, but having another look at the advert before releasing the video would have helped avoid the mistake of adding a faded cloth on the clothes-line

(+LYRICS) MUSIC REVIEW- BAD ENERGY BY SKEPTA FT WIZKID “THESE PEOPLE HAVE BAD ENERGY, THEY SHOULD HAVE STAYED AWAY FROM THE VIDEO!”

(Follow us On IG @ogefash_july4; Twitter @ogemama @ogefash)

A very melodious tune indeed! However, e b lyk say some people were suffering from the opposite of bad energy and really made the video uninteresting to watch. Okay o, but before I show you, kindly have a gander at the lyrics of the song.

LYRICS TO THE SONG BAD ENERGY “STAY FAR AWAY”

INTRO – (SKEPTA)

Beatzzz
Greez. True, ay

VERSE 1 (SKEPTA)

I’m tryna get paid, take money, cash cheques.
You see the set, that’s Lash, that’s Dex, Young C, Young Shorty, Milkavelli
White bricks, True Religion, on the telly, it’s me
Wiz got the house full of freaks. That’s why I haven’t been around for a week
I’m getting pounds in my sleep. I am at the top of the mountain, it’s peak
Bring it back before the villain. I had a life, real talk, true religion, it is in the blood, in the genes, in the sitching, walked in, no weapon, made a killing
Tongue kissing pretty women. New iPhone ’cause I’m done with all the bitching
Tryna be in my position. Keep my shades on ’cause they tryna see the vision

CHORUS (WIZKID)

She tell me, “Badman, see, I need your love, see, i need your love”
Me need you close to me, me, I tell her say me, oh, stay on the road                                           Bad energy stay far away, make it stay far away.                                                                       Just give me love for the night, give me love for the night, gyal waste no time.

VERSE 2 (SKEPTA)

Breakfast in bed on a plane. I could never complain.                                                                    I was walking with the limp, had the cane.
Dex said greatness and nothing was not the same, now we are set for life.                             I saw the turn up button and I pressed it twice. You heard I’m in the club.                            Then my best advice is put your shoes in and come and get your wife.                            Cause we’ve been having sex just for exercise. Every night, man are doing sexercise. She looks into my eyes, now she’s mesmerized.

VERSE 3 (SKEPTA)

Ay, they better get used to the flex. African man, you see the jewels on my neck.                  Black James bond, that’s the new silhouette.                                                                              You see me in the street and I was moving correct.                                                                        Been running around, tryna do the home run. Left that girl, she was no fun; I tie one, smoke one. Big Chief Skeppy. I answer to no one.                                                                          Counting my blessings, I’m feeling special. Bird’s eye view, sk level.                                          Give them the shaku when I dance with the devil. Young Fela Kuti, the return of the rebel. I told her I need some space. Real busy body, never stay in one place.                        And she knows I’ve got more Tricks under my sleeve.                                                                That’s why she never wants me to leave.

OUTRO

CHORUS (WIZKID)

She tell me, “Badman, see, I need your love, see, i need your love”
Me need you close to me, me, I tell her say me, oh, stay on the road                                           Bad energy stay far away, make it stay far away.                                                                       Just give me love for the night, give me love for the night, gyal waste no time.

THE REVIEW

Like I said in the intro, this is a melodious tune. It has great lyrics, but not well arranged. It needs a better lyrical arrangement for all the verses. Will re-arrange just the verse 1

Verse 1 could have been written this way for easy comprehension…

I’m tryna get paid, take money, cash cheques.                                                                                I’m at the top of the mountain, it’s peak.  I’m getting pounds in my sleep. New IPhone cause I’m done with all the bitching
(You see the set, that’s Lash, that’s Dex, Young C, Young Shorty, Milkavelli; (I don’t even know where to put this one))

White bricks, true religion on the telly, it’s me. Bring it back before the villain. I had a life, real talk, true religion. It is in the blood, in the genes, in the sitching. Walked in, no weapon made a killing.
Wiz got the house full of freaks. That’s why I haven’t been around for a week. Tongue kissing pretty women. Tryna be in my position. Keep my shades on ’cause they tryna see the vision.

Lyrically, the song has three verses and a chorus taken three times. The verses were taken by Skepta while the choruses by Wizkid. Skepta sang in English while Wizkid sang in pidgin. The lines in each verse are lengthy. The lyrics are meaningful and intellectual which shows his competence in song writing.

WHAT DOES THE SONG “BAD ENERGY” BY SKEPTA FT WIZKID MEAN?

The word “Energy” basically means to have strength to do an activity; to be strong. “Bad energy” on the other hand means to display poor or low strength in an activity.

Hence “Bad Energy” in the context of this song means not being able to keep up sexually with the opposite sex, as in not having the same sexual speed with someone. Or better still, it means that someone has poor or low strength when having sex.

Also, still in the context of the song, it means inability to keep up or be on the same progress speed with the artiste who is aiming for the top.

Generally, the song means low strength when it comes to any physical activity

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the verse 1 “I’m tryna get paid, take money, cash cheques” Skepta says before his life as a bad guy, he was properly trained and has a good religious background. He also says he is not sloth, but he is working assiduously in order to have plenty money; he puts in much energy in all he does which has taken him to the top. He has made so much that even when he is relaxing, he is still making money. He further says he hasn’t been around for a while because he and Wizkid have been having fun with ladies that are sexual addicts. He also says no one can steal his idea because he is safeguarding it well.

In the Chorus, “ She tell me, “badman, see, I need your love”   Wizkid says he doesn’t want any lady that will hook him or tie him down; no continuity. The kind of lady he wants is someone that will get down with him for a night, but the lady must have enough strength to make the night one to remember. He says any lady with poor or low energy should not come close to him.

In the verse 2, “Breakfast in bed on a plane. I could never complain”, the artiste says his progress speed was slow but now he and his crew are set for greatness. He also talks about having fun in the club and hooking up with some girls to turn up. He also says sex is his own kind of exercise; that is how he works out.

In the verse 3, “Ay, they better get used to the flex. African man, you see the jewels on my neck” the artiste talks about different things. He talks about seeing a bigger picture for his career, his countless blessings, how he dumped a lady that was not exciting him and stayed glued to the one that was fun “I tie one- smoke one”. He also talks about a lady that won’t let him be because she wants more of his sexercise for sex. He talks about being no one’s puppet, he says he is answerable to no one and does what he likes. He also says he can’t be compelled to submit to or obey anyone, and likens himself to the young version of the late Afro beat king- Fela

LOCATION

It was shot in Lagos Nigeria. It was shot outdoor all through; at the beach

COSTUME

Nothing spectacular about the choice of costume, they were all looking so….; I don’t know. But just to give an idea of what they wore, the ladies were mostly in bikini and the guys wore casual. There were also those that wore the African prints. Wizkid wore only a short all through the video with no upper garment while Skepta maintained his causal; a jean and a T-shirt.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Most of those that featured in the video really lack energy, especially the ladies; should I say they have bad energy? No action or seduction; did I just say that? Well, I just did not feel those ladies in the video…

By the way, Wizkid was looking so slim and dark even though the visuals are clear. For me, this video can’t be called “out of the ordinary,” rara!

Ahah, biko nu (please), what did Nyanda say after this particular line Amateur man, better step to this side. Bend boom boom that I may creep tonight” Please if you have an idea, kindly fill me in. Like seriously, I had to use my VLC player to slow the speed of the song, exactly like the same slow speed used when singing worship songs in churches, even slower self to really hear what Nyanda sang in her verse, especially after she sang “Amateur man…”, but still, I was not able to hear what she said.

Though her voice was loud, I still think the beat overshadowed her vocals; that was not too good.  This would be the first song of all the songs that have been reviewed on the blog that I had to take extra time just to hear few lines sang by an artiste and still not be able to put the words together. Other songs, after replaying them several times, I am still always able to hear what the artiste sang. Anyway, enough of the intro, like you know, we always want you all to take a gander at the lyrics before the main review. Njoyyy!

THE REVIEW

I just love this great tune called Wokie Wokie by Nigerian Mr.P and Jamaican Nyanda of Brick & Lace. The intro has a very catchy tune that will no doubt get your undivided attention and put you in the mood to watch the song from the beginning to the end. From the intro tune, I could tell that the song would be a melodious one, even though the background tune in the opening scene where they were both exchanging contact was pretty low that I thought my speaker was faulty, but the fault was from them. I mean, for 36 seconds we barely heard a beat- that is like a quarter of a full song (Short music though) . Don’t get me wrong, there was a background beat, but it was just too low.

Still on the intro, I am trying to understand the intro, Nyanda gave Mr. P the phone, then Mr.P returned to her and she dialed a number, then she gave the phone again to Mr. P and he walked away. So, who really owns the phone?

Ehen! That their Jetli film in the song was too long, it should have been trimmed, so many unnecessary prolonging of action. The intro was already prolonged (36 seconds), why prolong the short drama also (153 seconds; 2 minutes 33 seconds). The song ended at 4 minutes 45 but the drama elongated the song making it end at 7 minutes 18 seconds. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Mr.P action movie, but it was just too long.

Lyrically, the song comes in three verses; a verse each by Mr. P and Nyanda and a joint verse by the two. Mr.P’s verse was pretty short and he was audible.  His verse was made up of four lines. Nyanda’s had 12 lines in the verse 2 and was not quite audible. I had to strain my ears to really hear what she said.

The chorus was done three times. They sang mostly in English with a fuse of few pidgin words. The song has meaning, but I think the words used especially in the chorus were just too simple more like primary school words.

WHAT IS THE SONG “WOKIE WOKIE” BY MR.P  AND NYANDA ABOUT?

The song Wokie Wokie is basically about two adults who meet at the club and show interest in each other. They find each other appealing. Soon, their feelings intensify when they  see the features they each want in an opposite sex. They both want someone that is romantic and that can  do the wokie wokie. But wait o, abeg what does wokie wokie mean? Someone said it means sex, as in to know how to get down well with a guy or lady. Any idea? Share biko

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the intro “Oh oh yeah, Oh oh yeah., Oya do the wokie wokie yeah yeah. Girl you all I think of (Mr. P), she said she wants a romantic boy” Mr.P says that  anytime he thinks about the kind of lady he wants to be with, Nyanda is the only one that comes to his mind. Also, Mr. P has the major feature Nyanda wants in a guy “Romantic”

In the verse 1 “She told me that she came alone”, Mr. P approaches Nyanda and chats her up. From their chat, he gets to know that she is with no other guy. This gives him the chance to express his feelings for her and he afterwards promises to satisfy her needs. He likes her body and wants to waste no time to get down with her.

In the chorus “Girl you all I think of (Mr. P), she said she wants a romantic boy”, Mr. p says that Nyanda is the only one he thinks about as he knows he has everything Nyanda wants in a man; he is romantic and get an do the wokie wokie; get down well

In the verse 2 “Hmm, ah, street hardcore, why me I deal with” Nyanda emphasizes the type of man she wants to date and the type she doesn’t want to date.

In the verse 3 “You make me fall in love with you , am on it girl anything you want me to” they both confess love for each other. Mr.P says he wants to get down with her “Give it up to you” and Nyanda says he likes the ways he goes about expressing how he feels about her and what he wants from her.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Tiptoe: Walk quietly and carefully with one’s heels raised; Alone: No one is with you.

Romantic boy– A tender or loving guy. Someone that pampers women or does special things.

Bad girl: A girl that does what people tag as indecent. She constantly does what people disapproves of without hiding it. She does not give a damn about what people are saying or what will happen to her later.

Choky: Having or causing difficulty in breathing; Fire down: Aroused and ready to get down or have sex

Creep:Move slowly and carefully in order to avoid being heard or noticed

Sexy attitude: The way one walks, talks or acts that arouses the opposite sex

Romantic girl: A girl that excites a girl always, able to make a guy constantly have her in his thought or does something that arouses something in him.

Wokie Wokie: To get down with someone

Pull up on someone: Making out; Give it up: Surrender- to have sex with someone

SOUND:

Nyanda’s lines in the Verse 2 were drowned by the instrumental accompaniment. It is so annoying when a beat overshadows an artiste’s voice especially when when the person is a rapper; Nyanda rapped and her vocals were overshadowed by the beat. I could barely hear her. However, the song in entirety is so melodious. The instrumentals were well arranged and their vocals flowed well with the rhythm. I loved the combination of various instruments used in the song. However there was no consistency in the style of rhythm. The verse taken by Mr.P was shorter than that of Nyanda.  Also, after the culmination of the song at 7 minutes 18 seconds- they should have brought back the beat to end the short movie and the whole song.

Generally, the rhythm is attention grabbing and can compel one to get up on his or her feet to dance.

COSTUME

The ladies were mostly in bum shorts and crop tops while the guys wore casual

LOCATION

It was shot mostly outdoor ; a club. They also used a garage

VIDEO PRODUCTION

A very nice visual concept but it was just lengthy; it should have been trimmed. Quite dim.  Meanwhile, I love Mr.P’s moves @ the 4 minutes 11 seconds and 4 minutes 20 seconds of the video.

THE STORY IN THE VIDEO

At the club, Mr. P sees Nyanda and instantly falls in love with her. He collects her number and  promises to give her a call. They both find each other appealing. However, some group of boys seem to also have interest in Nyanda as they stylishly watch her chat away and dance with Mr. P.  Soon they approach Nyanda and Mr.P and she becomes uncomfortable. Mr. P decides to move her away from the place so she can get herself. But as soon as they are away from the crowd, some group of guys attack them. They beat Mr.P black and blue forcing Nyanda to watch the way they are torturing him. Thinking they have defeated Mr. P, they make an attempt to take Nyanda with them.

Moments later, Mr.P regains strength and beats all of them. He gets his new love interest back and then takes her away.

JUST WONDERING

The background beat at the opening scene was pretty low

Who owns the phone Nyanda or Mr.P? Nyanda gave the phone to Mr.P and the next thing he is taking it away…

How many times do they want to exchange contacts in the video, they have done that in the opening scene, why put it again in between the song?

I love the action film though, but did I just see Mr.P’s bum shoot out? @ 6 minutes 26 seconds. This action film odikwa serious

PLOT

Rita (Toyin Abraham) goes for a photo shoot and an interview after winning the entertainment award from the event her husband- Farouq (Odunlade Adekola) did not allow her go for. She afterwards hangs out with Victoria (Jackie Appiah) who advises her to divorce Farouq before he kills her with his constant beatings. During their chat, Victoria’s lesbian partner Nkechi (Charity Awoke) shows up. Both Nkechi and Victoria go over to Victoria’s place and she pleads with Victoria that they should have sex, but Victoria is not in the mood. While Victoria is on the phone with her footballer husband, Nkechi keeps begging her for sex subtly.

Ify, Agnes and Cindy are at the same location. (Francess Ben, Princess Shyngle and Chinenye Uyanna). While Ify is going through a movie script, Agnes is worried and pacing around the whole place because Nkechi, her Lesbian partner’s number is unreachable. Her attitude infuriates Ify who ridicules her and tells her to go to the police station instead to report that Nkechi is missing. Just then, Cindy walks out of the director’s office in anger. She tells her friends that the director intends sleeping with her before giving her a role. Ify is angry that the director asked Cindy instead of her to sleep with him. She pleads with Cindy to give her the director’s number, but Cindy insults her and leaves the place.

Lotanna (Jimmy Odukoya) goes over to his home to plead with his wife Anu (Roselyn Ngissah) to forgive him for the way he has been mistreating her. He promises to turn a new leaf and be a better husband. This pleases his unhappy wife and she accepts his apology oblivious of Lotanna’s scheme to use her to get her father –Mr Gabriel (Kanayo O, Kanayo) to renew his contract as an ambassador with Unique Telecommunication Company even if any test result shows that he is still taking cocaine.

Farouq (Odunlade Adekola) makes up with his wife- Rita (Toyin Abraham) and vows never to fight her again. But when he realizes that Rita changed the password of her phone, he swallows up his words and beats her again. Rita runs away from his presence to avoid more of his beatings

Tubosun (Felix Omokhodion) after going through some files in the night, seems in the moods for sex, but Steph (Tonto Dike) shuns him and this upsets Tubosun who notices that Steph has been keeping her body away from him and putting up some attitude for weeks. The next morning, Tubosun shows apathy in the breakfast prepared by Steph, since he is still upset with her about last night. Steph apologizes to him and he forgives her.

Agnes slaps Nkechi when she discovers that she has been with another woman all day. In the presence of their two other friends- Ify and Cindy, Agnes unconsciously tells Nkechi that their relationship is over, bringing to the realization of Ify and Cindy that they are both lesbians.

Victoria goes over to Unique Telecommunications company to see Mr. Gabriel concerning the renewal of her contract as an ambassador of the company. Mr. Gabriel vows to renew her contract. Mr. Gabriel shows interest in having Victoria’s body on his bed but Victoria promises to hook him up with younger girls anytime he is ready. On her way out of the office, she stumbles on Steph who apparently doesn’t like her. Steph immediately tells Mr. Gabriel to yank her name out of the list of the ambassadors for Unique Telecommunication.

Victoria gets a message that her contract with Unique Communication has been terminated. Meanwhile Agnes goes over to her place and warns her to stay away from her girlfriend Nkechi or risk being exposed to her husband and the world as a bi-sexual. Victoria in return threatens to expose Agnes’s murder secret if she tries to.

Rita and Farouq for the first time do not fight. Rita pleads that they take a picture together as couple after which Farouq rushes to work. Moments later, Rita gets a notification on the publication of  her abusive marriage online. She knows Victoria had given her story to their blogger friend-Joan (Susan Peters). So, she calls Victoria and lambasts her.

Lotanna enters the house with so much rage and tells his wife Anu that Unique Communication did not renew his contract.  In anger, Anu goes over to her Dad’s office and shows her displeasure with him for not renewing her husband’s contract. She threatens to stay away from her father if he doesn’t renew the contract. Mr. Gabriel afterwards yields to her request.

SEASON 4

vlcsnap-00220

Rita has forgiven Victoria for publishing her story. She offers to take both of them out. Her husband returns from work and discreetly listens to her conversation with Victoria. Immediately the call ended, Farouq again warns her to stay away from Victoria saying she moves from one man to another.

Cindy tries to preach to Agnes and Nkechi against lesbianism but they shun her. Meanwhile, Ify also interferes and Agnes fires back at her making her realize that she is actually aware of the fact that she keeps running out of various houses half naked when caught by wives of the men she sleeps with; this shuts her up for a while.

Lotanna tells his manager Lakeside (Osita Iheme) that he has been able to renew his contract with Unique Communication through the help of his wife. Lakeside on the other hand tells him that Rita would like to have him as the lead character on her new project. Lotanna agrees to be part of Rita’s new movie. Lakeside also tells him that some minister of information wants to have a private meeting with him, but Lotanna says he is not interested.

Both Victoria and Steph exchange bitter words when they bump into each other at the place Rita invited them to. Victoria is unhappy with Steph because of the role she played in the removal of her name from the list of ambassadors for Unique Communication. Steph leaves the place not wanting to exchange more words with Vitoria. Rita discusses her new movie with Victoria and tells her that she is the female lead character while Lotanna-her ex boyfriend is the male lead character. Meanwhile Mr. Gabriel calls Victoria and compensates her for removing her name from the ambassadors’ list. Victoria asks him to sponsor any movie of her choice to which he agrees to do so. Victoria tells Rita that she would co-produce the movie with her and this makes Rita giggle.

Tubosun and Steph just finished getting their groove. Steph tells Tubosun that a friend of hers- Juliet (Calista Okoronkwo) who needs her influence to get into the movie industry would live with them for a while. Tubosun is in support of anything she wants. When Steph enters the bathroom, she uses contraceptives.

Cindy tries to talk Nkechi out of lesbianism but she gets teary.

Victoria looks tensed seeing her ex-boyfriend -Lotanna again. She thinks he may show up for the shoot late. So she calls Rita up and queries her for casting Lotanna in the movie. Meanwhile, Lotanna has been around for a while, so he emerges from behind her and this makes Victoria uneasy even though she tries to show she is in charge of the production.

Steph’s friend –Juliet (Calista Okoronkwo) arrives from the village to Steph’s place. She intends living with Steph and Tubosun till she gets her acting breakthrough. Steph promises to connect her. Steph welcomes Juliet home again and takes her to her room.

Victoria and Lotanna while on set get lost in a world of theirs shunning the director’s instruction. Unable to control how she feels for Lotanna, Victoria walks out of the set to catch some breath. Lotanna follows her. Victoria lets him know that she is upset with him because he dumped her for Anu, Lotanna tells her that he married Anu because of his career, but the only person he truly wants is her.

Tubosun gets to meet Steph’s friend Juliet after which he hurries to work. Steph jokingly teases her friend about her cloth and takes her to her room to make a selection of clothes she would be wearing out.

Rita returns home late after the day’s shoot but Farouq would not let her enter the house. This makes Rita sleep in her car till the next morning where she goes on set without having her bath or changing cloth. Victoria sights her and asks her the reason she did not change her clothes. She cooks up some lies for Victoria but Victoria could tell they were lies. Meanwhile Lotanna walks in and shuns everybody.

Steph goes over to hubby’s office to check up on him but he is out of town.. Steph afterwards introduces Juliet to Uncle Gabriel who finds a way to give Juliet his card.

Saddened by his lover’s confession, the prince went to a quiet place in the woods to pacify himself. There, he met another lady- Nadine (Stephanie Okereke); (a lady born without a silver spoon) who was sad for selling her virginity to an old man in  a bid to get money to save her sister who ended up dying.
