(+LYRICS) MUSIC REVIEW: GBONA BY BURNA BOY “IS BURNA BOY IN THIS SONG?”

“When the gbedu enter my body ‘gegege-gegege’, na so I just dey dance instead of to dey write “gegege-gegege”’. Lol

Nna mhen, I love this gbedu! But biko (Please), if I may ask “is Burna boy in this song?” Of course he is in the song, he did not only feature in the song, he owns the song as well. Sorry I really had to ask the obvious. So why did I ask? When I first watched the video of the song, the “Bura boy” I saw in the video was not looking like the Burna boy I used to know in terms of “Physique.” So as I watched the music video from the beginning to the end, I was hoping to see the real Burna boy with some real “flesh” in the video.

So, I looked and looked well as in “looku looku dada” for Burna boy in the video , just like I was looking for Wizkid in the song Bad Energy which he sang with Skepta (By the way, the song ‘Bad Energy’ as well as ‘Wokie Wokie’ by Mr.P, would be reviewed on Ogefash Blog next Music Wednesday), but I didn’t see any other better visual representation of him. Kilode? Did he jeun soke or jeun sile? He was looking so skinny in the video. Is this some form of camera effect or tricks or it is what is trending now by all these young Nigerian artistes? Hmmm, okay o, ngwanu continue, ba komai.

Well that’s by the way, I am sure you would love to enjoy the lyrics before the main review.

THE REVIEW

I love this “Gbona” music video sha; it was not unnecessarily prolonged. Some music videos nowadays are annoyingly becoming too lengthy. Ahah! Kilode! Even if you want to act “Jetli” movie inside your music video, it should be succinct else fans would somewhat avoid playing the song when they just remember how long-winded the video is or they may end up resenting the whole song.

Moving on, did you watch the “1 minute 43-53 seconds of this video; I totally loved it.

However, I couldn’t feel Burna boy’s vitality throughout the video. He was just singing like one without muscle.  I love the 1 minute 20 seconds of the video where he reiterated “No go dull am,” I also love the way they danced in the “1 minute 24 seconds of the video”

Lyrically– The lyrics are punchy but the lines in the verses are not interrelated; though most of the lyrics in entirety complement the title of the song “Gbona”. For instance the lines in the Verse 1 do not quite connect well especially the last two lines. The first two lines seem different from the last two lines. The song comes in two short verses and three choruses. He sang mostly in pidgin but fused it with Yoruba and Igbo.

Hence, I would say punchy lyrics, but it could have been written better.

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the chorus, “When the gbedu dey enter body, enter body” the artiste says when a song is out of the ordinary (as in ‘odi’ very interesting) and the girls are feeling it, they are left with no option that to dance to the song.

In the verse 1, “Dem say I dey craze, I no normal” the artiste says he is still a nice person “Onyeoma” even though people think he is berserk. He also says he has been in the music industry for long.

In the verse 2 “As I dey sing, dem feel the pulse”, the artiste says people are enjoying and dancing to his music. He says he is very hot “Gbona” and it is really not explainable. Hence the reason for the proverb “I no fit tell you as water enter coconut.”

WHAT DOES THE SONG “GBONA”BY BURNA BOY MEAN

“GBONA” is a Yoruba word that means hot. The artiste basically says he is very hot in the music industry because people are enjoying his good songs and dancing to them as well. He also says he and the people around him are in money and they are enjoying life “Jeun soke.” They have the money to do what they want to do, even call the police or better still, silence the police on a robbery case; if you know what I mean.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Jeun soke- chop up, to be in money, to live better;    Ezioku– The truth

Looku looku dada– (Look well);          Pulse– Beat

Onyeoma– Good person                        Gbona– Hot;    Gbona Feli– Very hot

Pikin– Child

SOUND

A melodious song I must say. The afro-beat style of rhythm is certainly interesting to the ears. The lyrics flowed well with the beat and the instrumentals were well arranged. I could hear the intense beating of the drums which played its part to enhance the beauty of the song. Even though he was not expressive enough while singing the lyrics, I can categorically tell you that his vocals were rich enough.

LOCATION

It was shot outdoor- on top of a building. It was also shot indoor- inside an empty building. However, we are yet to confirm the country it was shot, though it looks like Nigeria.

COSTUME

Burna boy wore a shirt and a trouser; sincerely, I did not like Burna boy’s choice of costume at all. I don’t know what to make out of the costume of those masked guys with helmets. Well I certainly noticed that they wore lots of jackets in the song.helmets. The ladies’ costumes were okay; mostly pant and bra with a net covering from waist downwards, multi coloured pants with a top and jacket,a beret, atleast, no sensitive part was exposed. At some point, they wore the same type of heels. I also love their head-ties. The only dominant colour in the outfit of those that featured in the video was black.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Visuals were quite pleasing to the eyes. Quite artistic I must say!. However, the artiste did not put energy into the song. Even late Fela, the king of afrobeat sang with much energy. Burna boy’s expression of his lyrics was zero. Every of his move was not just energetic.

I love where they held the Nigerian flag in the video- At least one artiste out of hundreds of them is still proud to be a Nigerian. It makes me remember the day I went for a certain competition. All the Nigerian contestants had refused to carry the Nigerian flag. So, I took it upon myself to carry it. When they now decided to pick a leader that would carry the flag, they all now ganged up against me to collect the flag that they had rejected. Phew! I hated that day sha; but I was happy that one thing eventually compelled them to carry the country’s flag.

(+LYRICS) MUSIC REVIEW- NWA BABY BY DAVIDO “LIKE SERIOUSLY, WETIN CONCERN CHIOMA CONCERN THIS VIDEO?”

The beginning of this song has got me laughing though. Why you may ask? Davido was speaking like an “Americana” before “No, thank you, don’t take long… Hello wadup” but immediately he heard gunshots; Lesekese (As in immediately) his “Americana” accent vanished and was replaced with Ibadan people’s way of saying “What happen?” “Ooh” Lol! Infact, I am sure he is from Ibadan. Hold up a second, let me ask google first….

Okay, Davido is from Ede, Osun State. Omo Yoruba! Omo Osun! Omo Nigeria! Of course, his uncle- Senator Ademola Adeleke was vying for Osun governorship position

Anyway, that is by the way, feel the lyrics to the song below

THE REVIEW

It took me days trying to really match the lyrics of this song to the video, especially the chorus. Perhaps it is because some of the lines in the chorus contradicts the last scene of the video. In the first line of the chorus, he sang”I was locked up, they wont let me out”; he was truly locked up, but then who made him get locked up? His Nwababy he featured in the video. He further sang “Only you let me out” How na?

In the second line of the chorus “That shit na fuck up gal;  they won’t let me out, only you let me out,” yes, we agree that his Nwababy in the video messed up, but again he said this same Nwababy let him out. How how how? Abi people una no see the video ni? She got him locked him up and he said “Only you let me out.” If you ask me, I would say those lines are really confusing.

But wait o, I heard some other inmates ask “Wey Chioma?” Like seriously? I am like wetin concern Chioma, concern this video? If you ask me, it was totally unnecessary. The lady he was dating in the video was not Chioma, so wetin be the correlation? Na the Nwababy in the video even lock am up for the prison self.

It would have been logical to call Chioma if at the end of the video a lady or Chioma let him out or set him free from the prison or wherever he was locked up, but that did not happen.

Except the message Davido was trying to pass across in this video is that he was cooped up other women/people emotionally or otherwise, but the only person that rescued him was Chioma; that looks understandable. But then, Chioma should have made an appearance in the last scene, but she did not.

Moving on, the video has got me laughing sha; the scene Davido was speaking like an Americana and also the scene where the police entered the restaurant to look for Davido’s Nwababy, and the servers as well as some customers were actually using her “Shaku Shaku” dance moves to describe her.

Also, I love Davido’s body gesture at the 4 minutes 14 seconds of the video.

Lyrically, the song comes in two short verses and a chorus that was sang five times.  The video made the lyrics to the chorus somewhat confusing . “Locked up, they won’t let me out, but you let me out…” “That shit you did na fuck up…”

He sang mostly in English, but also sang in pidgin on few occasions. However, the lyrics to this song in entirety are heartening.

WHAT DOES THE SONG “NWA BABY” BY DAVIDO MEAN?

Nwababy by Davido is a love song by the artiste to his heartthrob, otherwise called “Nwababy” in this video, where he confesses the power she has over him, what she does to him, what she makes him do, how he has surrendered his life to her, how he is head over heels in love with her and the kind of “beautiful and nice treat” he wants to give her when they are together. The song also talks about how his Nwababy’s kind of love has set him free from other kinds of insecure love (Though there was no scene that showed that in the video)

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

“Baby no feeding bottle” For this line, I can’t really connect the dots. Perhaps what the artiste is trying to say here is that his girlfriend is a jazzy girl.

“My baby dey wear Sphaghetti, She say, ‘If you want it you can get it’. And I say, ‘Ah, baby baby” I still can’t connect the dots also, except Davido is trying to say his Nwababy is wearing a very “easy to remove” cloth, incase they are in the mood to get down…Winks (Lol, any other idea, knidly fill in the comment box)

I really do not think the above lines fit into the song, or probably they were not used in the right way or place.

From the verse 1 “Shey you wan put me for trouble? What is my, what is my crime?” we can tell that the artiste is irrevocably in love with his Nwababy and can take a bullet for her. She drives him crazy and makes him do things that he did not even plan to do. He can risk his life for her. The artiste also talks about the power and control his woman has over him She drives him crazy and makes him alter his plans just for her sake. The artiste says the girl has his heart with him, in essence his life and death are in her hands

In the chorus “Yeah! I was locked up; they won’t let me out, but you let me out.” the artiste says even though people confined him to a place, his Nwababy is the only person that let him out. (This however contradicts the message of the video- because in the real sense, the girl actually made him get locked up, and she did not even look back)

In the verse 2 “And I’ll take you to my ends o, we’ll make a movie in my room” he talks about what his “Nwababy” means to him, how she is his choice over other ladies and how he wants to have unending fun with her.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Locked up- To be confined to a place, unable to leave a place

Shit– Nonsense, Crap  ; Nwababy– My babygirl

Pada leyin mi– Get off my back        ; Orisha– Deity, god

Fucked up– messed up, crazy act, unreasonable act, to do wrong

SOUND:

At some point I was feeling his vocals, but it later looked like he was actually struggling with his vocals. He had some pitch problem. I could feel him practically straining his voice to sing a particular line; rehearsal gone bad or what. His vocals @ that 1minute 21 seconds, 3 minutes 10 seconds, 2 minutes 52 seconds did not go well; where he reiterated the words “Die, Baboom and Shaku” But he later picked up. Nwababy by Davido is his worst song in terms of vocals.

However, the beat was great and interesting to the ears. Instrumentally, the song has plain accompaniment but Davido flowed well in it. I love the fact that he was very expressive; every scene he was “Fan-freaking-tastic expressive. I mean, he was so emotional. I also love his voice modulation at the 3 minutes 45 seconds of the song, as in, when he took the high notes, it was not too screwy; he did not go out of tune.

LOCATION

It was shot outdoor; majorly on the highway. The indoor shoot was carried out in a motel, restaurant and the prison

COSTUME

The Nwababy was practically wearing a net top and she was not wearing any underclothing (bra). It is somehow sha. And she was moving around from one place to another exposing her breasts; phew! Davido on his part just wore something casual. Generally, nothing spectacular about the costume.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

I really love the way Davido expressed the lyrics; so emotional. The “Nwababy” was looking like black and white television in the video.

Hehe, I don’t understand oo, was it that this “Nwababy” wore this same net top that exposed her two breasts to go and rob the filling station? Even this their story in the video is quite unrealistic. People that rob always lie low for a while because they know that the police would come looking for them, but that was not the case here. After stealing the money, they started painting the town red with the same costume..How na?

They have got a video concept, but something is just missing in the video.

THE STORY IN THE VIDEO

Davido and his girlfriend stop by at a filling station. His girlfriend excuses herself for some minutes and goes to rob the filling station. They both leave the place afterwards to a restaurant to eat and drink after which they go to a motel to rest as well as get their groove. The police come around the filling station to investigate the robbery and the employees describe Davido’s Nwababy to them. They are able draw her exact face from their description. They move from one place to another in search of Davido’s “Nwababy”. They put some of her pictures around the street with  a “wanted” sign on it. One of the workers in the motel Davido and his Nwababy are having fun, sees that they are the ones the police are looking. SO, she immediately alerts the police. Davido and his Nwbaby soon find out that the police are nearby so they pack their remaining money and escape.

On the highway, Davido’s Nwababy pulls over, points a gun at Davido and asks him to get off the car. He obeys her words and she drives off immediately. Moments later, the police catch-up with Davido. They arrest Davido and lock him up somewhere unknown. In the prison, some of the inmates ask “Where is Chioma?

JUST WONDERING

Why does he like to stick out his tongue @ 47 seconds, it makes him look like an old man and hides his cuteness.

His vocals @ that 1minute 21 seconds, 3 minutes 10 seconds, 2 minutes 52 seconds was really out of tune; where he sang Die, Baboom and Shaku

Why was he laughing at the 4 minuted 17 seconds of the video? Even the police woman was also laughing @ the 3 minutes 57 seconds of the video

Really, I may be the boomba boom ba boom, baboom, what does that mean?

It was only in this song that I realized that people rob and don’t lie low for a while, but start painting the town red.
