AN ALLOY ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCTION

A woman- Pauline (Anika Noni Rose) was forced to take drastic decisions on her only surviving child- Maddy Whittier (Amandla Stenberg) after losing her son and husband in a car accident. The fear of losing Maddy also, made her confine her to the four corners of the room with the deceit that she has a deadly disease called SCID (Severe Combined Immune Deficiency- a primary immune deficiency caused by genetic defects that affect the function of T and B cells. The disease makes those affected highly susceptible to life threatening infections by viruses, bacteria and fungi)

Maddy was unable to associate with anyone. There were lots of places she wanted to go to but her predicament hindered her from going. She only imagined being there. She lived a careful life indoors. Everything she used were always sterilized and she wore only white t-shirts. She could not interact with anything that had not been sanitized. The only people she knew were her mum, nurse- Carla. She also used the internet and read a lot of books.

One day, they got a new neighbour and lonely Maddy could not help but notice one of the cute neighbours Olly Bright (Nick Robinson) who also took interest in her. They started communicating with each other by staying at the window sides through written words on a paper, then phone messages and then online chats.

Overtime, they both fell in love and Maddy broke all rules of not stepping out just to spend time with Olly. In the process of having fun at Hawaii, she fainted and was rushed to the hospital. When she recovered, her mum took her home back.

The doctor who treated Maddy in Hawaii confirmed from his letter that she does not have SCID, and that she fell sick because she had spent her whole life indoors. She checked her mum’s documents and did not see doctor’s report that she had SCID except some jottings by her mum on SCID. At that point, she realized there was never anythingg wrong with her and that all the SCID was just her mum’s fabrication to keep her indoors. In anger, she confronted her mum.
