(+Lyrics+Meaning+Translation) Music Review: “Fia” by Davido

“Suuukura kilo ko si o, eh! (Yeaah), Suku shaker, I am shoe maker, Yeehhh!!!” What exactly does that line mean? Well, that was the question my mum asked me as I played, watched and listened to the song “FIA” by Davido umpteen times in order to review it. So, I partially replied “Mum, this is Nigeria, Davido is a Nigerian, that is our styl of music; to always have a line that would grab people’s attention even though it means nothing. So, don’t be surprised when someone passes you by and he or she is singing that line. In essence, Nigerians also love to listen to/sing catchy words even if it doesn’t have any meaning. So what’s up with FIA? View the lyrcis first…

The music video FIA by Davido is a different and nice concept by the artiste unlike the typical Nigerian music videos where our eyes are filled with naked girls, lots of alcohol, borrowed money as well as eye confusing colour palette images.

In the song, Davido says loving someone doesn’t mean putting your hands into fire. In essence, you may extremely love someone, but that doesn’t mean doing evil or wrong things just to prove your love.

The first time in his song he wont mention OBO. The video was shot both outdoor and indoor with a sepia background. It is quite glaring that no music artiste has ever attempted this style of music which is a plus to him. Also worth mentioning is the fact that Nigerian musicians including Davido now have their dancers wear the Ankara fabric.

Just thinking
• The intro beat looks the same with that of the song “Mad over you by Runtown”, though it later became similar with “IF by Davido”
• And why are tongues wagging because he said “If you don’t have money , hide your face”, is small doctor complaining about the line, so why una dey drink panadol for another person headache.
• Was there really a need for the lady to be on that bridal dress
• Those two traditional dancers, I don’t really know their essence in the music video, their dance was not visible enough, the camera was always quick to move away from them. I know musicians are trying to promote the African dance, but I don’t really think it was needed in the video. Perhaps, it was not fused well with the video
• The camera generally doesn’t focus much on any of them. Also, the video looks like something that was shot in a dim light
• I cant really connect the chorus with verse 2.

But then, I want you to know that this is a lovely song, but the video could have been better!

  1. I do agree with all of the ideas you’ve presented in your post. They’re very convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are too short for starters. Could you please extend them a bit from next time? Thanks for the post.
