Whew! Finally, I was able to pull through with the review of this song. To be honest, the review of this song took several hours leading to several days which is not typical of me when reviewing songs. It is the most demanding song that I have ever reviewed on Ogefash Photo Blog. Yes, I know the “easy” to remember chorus “I want you to be happier…” may make you think there is nothing demanding about the song, well then, try deciphering the two verses especially the Verse 1…
So, did you try it out? Demanding or not? Quickly take a gander at the lyrics to the song below…
LYRICS TO THE SONG “HAPPIER” BY MARSHMELLO FT BASTILLE
INTRO/CHORUS
Lately, I’ve been, I’ve been thinking
I want you to be happier; I want you to be happier.
VERSE 1
When the morning comes
When we see what we have become
In the cold light of day we are a flame in the wind
Not the fire that we begun
Every argument, every word we can’t take back
‘Cause with the all that has happened
I think that we both know the way that the story ends
PRE-CHORUS
Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
‘Cause this just don’t feel right to me
I want to raise your spirits
I want to see you smile (but)
Know that means I’ll have to leave (x2)
CHORUS
Lately, I’ve been, I’ve been thinking
I want you to be happier; I want you to be happier
VERSE 2
When the evening falls
And I’m left there with my thoughts
And the image of you being with someone else
Well, that’s eating me up inside
But we run our course, we pretend that we are okay
Now if we jump together at least we can swim
Far away from the wreck we made
PRE-CHORUS
Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
‘Cause this just don’t feel right to me
I want to raise your spirits
I want to see you smile (but)
Know that means I’ll have to leave (x2)
CHORUS
Lately, I’ve been, I’ve been thinking
I want you to be happier; I want you to be happier.
BRIDGE
So I’ll go, I’ll go oh oh oh
I will go, go, go
So I’ll go, I’ll go oh oh oh
I will go, go, go
CHORUS
Lately, I’ve been, I’ve been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
Even though I might not like this
I think that you’ll be happier, I want you to be happier
PRE-CHORUS
Then only for a minute (only for a minute)
I want to change my mind
‘Cause this just don’t feel right to me
I want to raise your spirits
I want to see you smile (but)
Know that means I’ll have to leave (x2)
CHORUS
Lately, I’ve been, I’ve been thinking
I want you to be happier; I want you to be happier
OUTRO
So I’ll go, I’ll go
I will go, go, go
THE REVIEW
I am so in love with everything about this song. Talk about the beat, the colorful setting which blended with their costume; that yellow colour which was the predominant colour in the video indeed brightened the video.
Moving on, lyrically, the lyrics are so on point. The words used in the song are not the “cliché” type of words or the conventional words used by artistes in their songs. What I mean is that they are not the everyday kind of words we use or we are familiar to, perhaps the reason it took days trying to decipher the verses. The choice of words will no doubt enhance listeners and viewers vocabulary; thumbs up!
The song has only two verses comprising seven lines each. The chorus and pre-chorus took a chunk part of the song; it was sung repeatedly, they were basically the only predominant thing in the song. The Chorus “Lately, I have been thinking” was sung five times while the Pre-chorus “Then only for a minute” was sung three times.
The song is indeed meaningful as it talks about the artiste’s strong desire to see someone happy even if it means giving them space for a while which he literally sang in the chorus.
The lyrics are well written and arranged as well. Although, the verses on their own may not be comprehensible until when linked to the Pre-chorus and chorus. The artistes sang in English
Song arrangement: Intro/chorus- verse 1- Pre Chorus- Chorus- Verse 2- Pre Chorus Chorus- Bridge- Chorus- Pre chorus- Chorus- Outro
BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG
In the chorus “Lately, I’ve been thinking” The artiste is concerned about making someone extremely happy. He desires to see someone happy.
In the Verse 1, “When the morning comes” the artistes say that when they quarrel with their significant other, they let things get out of hand. They say words they ought not to say to each other. When they quarrel, rather than stay calm and think over the whole matter before reacting, they allow emotions get the better of them.
The artistes feel sticking around in a relationship when it is not working can only lead to resentment or mayhem in the relationship. But they believe that later in life when they have finally actualized their dreams, they would all realize that the decision was for their happiness.
In the Verse 2, “When the evening falls” the artistes say that in the evening time, what occupies their mind is their loved one being with someone else and it tears their soul. They believe that if they stick together and agree together with their significant other, they can both fight whatever that keeps ruining their relationship.
In the Pre- Chorus, “Then only for a minute” the artistes say at times they are always having the second thought about their significant other. At times, they want to reconsider their decision to quit the relationship and then stay back, but because they want to see their significant other cheerful again, they rescind to their former decision to leave

LOCATION

COSTUME
Costumely! I love their costume , very colorful. They were more on casual except the scene the ladies wore sport wear.
SOUND
Melodious!
I can’t get this song off my mouth! Just screamed that though! I will certainly choose to replay this song over “Undecided” by Chris Brown. Very tuneful, memorable and original. So dynamic vocals! Their lyrics flowed well with the rhythm. They were also unswerving with the style of rhythm. The various instrumentals used (piano, guitar, shakers, tambourine) blended well and enhanced the beauty of the song. These made the song interesting to the ears. It emphasized the mood of the song. The different instruments combined to perform the song made the song interesting to the ears. The artistes chose a memorable group of words for the chorus which was accompanied with a memorable beat.
VIDEO PRODUCTION
I love the way they shot this video. From the video, one can tell that the predominant colour is yellow. The little girl right from childhood to adulthood maintained one colour for her costume.
Does the video reflect the theme of the message? Yes, however, the lyrics centered more on adult relationship, but the video focused on making people happy generally.
But it is an interesting video with terrific lightning.
