OGEFASH: I recently watched your movies back to back, and it didn’t take me time to realize how exceptional you are when interpreting the role given to you. I really love your movies. Thanks for granting Ogefash Photo Blog this interview. Today- July 3rd is actually your birthday, we love to say happy birthday to you from all of us @Ogefash Photo Blog
CHUCKS CHYKE: My name is CHUCKS CHYKE coined from Okoroafor Chukwuemeka Chibuikem. I am from Okoko Item, in Abia State. I am a Christian, and also from a very loving Christian family of six (6). I studied Economics at the University of Calabar, Cross River State. As a kid, I did not talk much because I grew up in a reserved environment. I have a lovely family; love was shared amongst all equally. The ultimate priority in our family is to love God and be successful in whatever you do; work right and be the best. I grew up in a family where discipline and respect for humanity was the keyword. I grew up with the best parents ever that gave us all that life demanded in a very controlled measure. My parents did everything possible to make sure we were well taking care of socially and educationally. We had the luxury they could afford at our fingertips. I really owe my success to them.
CHUCKS CHYKE: Interestingly, I already studied film before my university days. I decided to study Economics at the university to balance showbiz. But studying Economics as a degree didn’t stop me from going to the theatre arts department to flaw some of the students there. I learned more and also participated in their departmental rehearsals.
CHUCKS CHYKE: It is a name given to me by my parents. My dad named me Chukwuemeka so he calls me Chucks while my mum named me Chibuikem, so she calls me Chyke. I answered to these names since teen days.
CHUCKS CHYKE: I have always wanted to be a filmmaker and an actor. My first act happened when I was in primary six, and it was supported by applauds. I have always wanted to pass a message to people without talking too much. So, when I was a kid, I tried training myself in every possible way. I watched a lot of cartoons, mimicked their acts, and memorized their lines; dreaming that one day, I will have the opportunity of acting a Hollywood movie. This led me to write my first movie script in my primary school days, which I wrote as a story with dialogues, because, in those days I read a lot of novels and storybooks.
CHUCKS CHYKE: I went to an acting school. I enrolled in Bestway Film Institute in the year 2000 to learn acting, filmmaking, and the entertainment business. I paid attention to every detail in class. When I play any character; I consider the techniques and rudiments of acting.
Chucks Chyke: I always act inside the bathroom when having my bath. My family would always knock on the door when I am having my bath. In the year 1999, I decided to choose acting and filmmaking as a career. So I stated the journey into acting/filmmaking in the year 2000. Although at some point, my parents wanted me to go in for an 8am to 5pm job. I did but…
CHUCKS CHYKE: As early as my primary school days. I always tried to express myself through drama in those days. I remember my teen days when my family always knocked on the bathroom door anytime I was having my bath. This is because when I am in the bathroom, I will always act, talk to myself, and play with imaginary characters on a script that I developed in my head. In exactly the year 1999, I decided I was going to make acting and film making a career. That was when I made a move to register and get trained as an actor/filmmaker.
CHUCKS CHYKE: I have been acting professionally since the year 2000. My parents were of great support, as long as I maintained good behavior and good grades in school. They supported me in the little they could as they did not give me what they felt could be of distractions to me. Though at a later stage, they tried to convince me to go in for an 8am to 5pm job which I did, but didn’t find fulfillment in them.
CHUCKS CHYKE: I always ask myself “who, what, why, where, when, and how” is this character am about to play. These help me in the mannerisms and characterizations of the character. I also consider my audience; who am talking to, how best I can capture their attention, and in turn affect their lives positively. When I can see my audience; then I decide the best approach to the character. For me, it’s a life and should be delivered at maximum expectations.
CHUCKS CHYKE: To be a good actor, one must first understand and believe that talent is nothing unless harnessed. For you to succeed as an actor, you must be trained to know what you are about to engage yourself in; so that you can do it right.
OGEFASH: AFTER I WATCHED THE MOVIE “AS CRAZY AS IT GETS,” I SAW CHUCKS CHYKE AS A “SOFT” PERSON, BUT WHEN I WATCHED “LET KARMA,” I SAW THE “TOUGH” SIDE OF CHUCKS; I WAS REALLY THRILLED. SO WHAT’S YOUR TRAIT? ARE YOU THE GENTLE KIND OF PERSON OR VERY TOUGH GUY? DOES YOUR PERSONALITY REFLECT IN YOUR MOVIE?
CHUCKS CHYKE: I try not to find myself in the characters I play because the character in the script is not me while the script is a graveyard with a pool of characters. My job is to find the character and become it through any means possible. I am one of the actors that believe that an actor should go any length to find all the personalities of the character he or she is to play. So what I do is find the personality of the character and bury myself in it. I believe every character has a personality and I am sure those personalities are not me. Every character I have played was born out of deep research, and my consideration of how best to satisfy my audience with respect to the realism of the character.
CHUCKS CHYKE: 200% demanding! People watch movies and say all sorts of things thinking it’s an easy come easy go job. It is one hell of a job. A billion dollars is not enough to pay someone who can become a thousand persons without flinching; an actor does not just play a character but also observes the business and entertainment of the act. Acting is a job that affects you psychologically, emotionally, physically, socially, and sometimes religiously. There are characters that after playing them, your life will never remain the same. It is more like practicing metaphysics; the combined practice of realism, abstract actions, and emotions.
CHUCKS CHYKE: I love the fact that I have the opportunity to give guidance to people’s lives. I believe we are all messengers on earth and this is one of my major ways of fulfilling my life duty from God. The acting profession is very profitable and reliable. I will say I love being an actor and it’s a job I will do again and again.
CHUCKS CHYKE: An actor can opt-out anytime the actor feels “acting” is not bringing to the table the required self desires. A lot of actors have left the acting profession to do something else, but passionate actors never quit because it’s a job with no retirement age.
CHUCKS CHYKE: No! I will say I am about to start. There are very big dreams and aspirations that I am yet to fulfill in the movie industry. It’s never over until it’s all over. I have an audience all around the world that I am yet to satisfy.
CHUCKS CHYKE: I will say it has affected us greatly because we have not been able to film. Our job is one that requires a large gathering of people from different works, in which most times, we do not know the personal health conditions of the people we are working with. Everyone now needs to be very careful especially for a transferable virus-like coronavirus. So producers have been advised to keep calm and wait for a cure so as not to endanger the lives of the individuals working on their movie set. This has caused filmmakers to feed on what they have saved up, awaiting a release on the lockdown.
CHUCKS CHYKE: Very much! I have witnessed politicians confess that they were recognized in some countries because the citizens of the said countries love to watch Nollywood movies and these movies are acted by Nigerian/Nollywood actors. The citizens of the said countries even dream of seeing Nollywood actors.
CHUCKS CHYKE: Well, comparing Hollywood A-list actors and Nollywood A-list; the earning difference is quite wide apart, and this plays a major role in lifestyle. But, we are coming up fast. For now, we have filmmakers that do only movies and they are living large. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Hollywood has been there for more than 100 years but Nollywood is barely five (5) decades old, I will say we are not doing badly in lifestyle.
- Pre Production: This is the moment the vision is born; from story to scripting to hiring of crew and cast, to securing every logistics required.
- Production: This is the moment we roll the camera from start to finish. That moment all hands must be on deck without resting.
- Post Production: This is the moment the producers and directors sit with the production editors and cut out; and also do finishing on pictures and sound.
- Distribution: This is the moment of truth. When the audience will judge the movie.
CHUCKS CHYKE: Well, first of all, I try to research the actor’s strength; because working with rookies demands a lot more work. I try to put professionalism first; patience and tolerance are the major tools I employ whenever I am working on a film set.
CHUCKS CHYKE: Lol! A fan actually met me in a mall and pointed out that the shirt I was wearing was what I wore in a movie she saw me in. I really felt embarrassed. Also, I met a fan that felt the action I played in a particular movie in which the character died was real; so the fan started crying at the sight of me alive.
CHUCKS CHYKE: People do not really know that I am really a private person. I grew up as a private person that loves to have fun. A lot of people think am very wild and crazy. Yes, I can be funny and love to help humanity, but I am a very reserved, disciplined, and homely person.
CHUCKS CHYKE: Well I am an early riser and immediately I rise, it’s activity all the way on my businesses of the day. I am not much of a foodie but I eat heavy whenever I am ready to feed. I also take lots of fruits and vegetables. I sit out some evenings to relax with family and friends, and also to discuss business sometimes. I am not an early-to-bed kind of person; I usually see movies at night.
CHUCKS CHYKE: My advice is no matter what the matter is, you can give yourself another chance. You can’t take that chance unless you stay alive. Your limitations are unreal. It means no challenge is worth your life.
