(+LYRICS+MEANING+TRANSLATION) MUSIC REVIEW: PANINI BY LIL NAS X “THE MEANINGS OF PANINI!”

IG @ogefashblog.

According to Urban Dictionary, the word Panini means “A fan of a formerly small artist who rejects them when they blow up. They say their music is underrated but get mad when it goes mainstream, no loyalty”

Panini according to Google also means “a sandwich made with Italian bread, usually toasted.”

But Lil Nas X already clarified the air on the meaning of his song Panini. He revealed on twitter some months back that “Panini” is not about a sandwich.” Panini is the name given to a character in a cartoon: Cat- Rabbit. In the cartoon, Panini had a burning desire to be with Chowder (Chef Apprentice), but Chowder was not interested in her. Chowder turned her down until he was not able to do so again as he yielded to her, and they later got married. Read more from Wiki on Panini.

WHAT IS THE SONG PANINI BY LIL NAS X ABOUT

Going by Urban dictionary’s definition and the words of Lil Nas during interviews, the song talks about some people staying back from the artiste immediately they noticed that he had gotten to the peak of his career.

Now that the artiste is significant, he is using this song to call on people who have always been there for him before his significance, to know why they won’t love him the same way they loved him when he was insignificant. According to the artiste, he said he thought these people would be happy for him that he is among the big acts in Today’s music industry, but instead they are sad about it. View below

“Thought you wanted me to go up. Why you tryna keep me teeny now?”

The word teeny means small

One can relate the theme of this song to what happened in the video, where the lady who featured in the video (Skai Jackson) suddenly showed disinterest in the artiste because he is in the spotlight.

Although Lil Nas asked people what they want from him in order to satisfy them; in the true sense, even if they tell him to stay away from the music scene for a while, he really can’t grant that wish. He has always wanted to do music and now that he is popular, he can’t stay away. Also, he wants a big Benz, which he can only acquire through a successful career. In essence, he can’t grant that wish and they can’t stop him from progressing. They can’t push him away cause he would always be in their face which is evident as he keeps popping up wherever Skai Jackson was in the video.

The song comes in three verses. The chorus and the hook were taken twice. The major instruments used in the composition of the song include drums, keyboard, and the guitar. Lil Nas acknowledged sampling parts of Nirvana’s “In Boom” and thanked Francis Bean Cobain via his twitter account.

Take a gander at the lyrics below.

VERSE 1

Hey Panini, don’t you be a meanie
Thought you wanted me to go up
Why you tryna keep me teeny? I
It’s a dreamy, wished it on a genie
I got fans finally, ain’t you wanting them to see me? I

CHORUS

I thought you want this for my life, for my life
Said you wanted to see me thrive, you lied

HOOK

Just say to me, what you want from me
Just say to me, what you want from me

VERSE 2

Hey, Panini, don’t you be a meanie
Thought you wanted me to go up
Why you tryna keep me teeny now?
Now they need me, number one on streaming
Oh yeah, you used to love me
So what happened, what’s the meaning? I

CHORUS

I thought you want this for my life, for my life
Said you wanted to see me thrive, you lied

VERSE 3

Now when it’s all done, I get the upper hand
I need a big Benz, not another fan
But I still want you as a fan
I’ma need to sit down, don’t mean to make demands
But I need you to

HOOK

Say to me, what you want from me
Just say to me, what you want from me
