(+LYRICS+MEANING+TRANSLATION) MUSIC REVIEW: ARIZONA BY WIZKID AND BLAQ JERZEE “THE MEANING OF THE SONG ARIZONA”

IG @ogefashblog.

First of all, it seems like Star Boy -Wizkid and Blaq Jerzee already signed an agreement to do a series of collaboration musically. What ya think? Well, to me, I think it may be so because in the space of four weeks or thereabout, they have released two songs together; the first song is Blow   which has been reviewed already on Ogefash blog (View the review here https://ogefash.reviews/2020/02/05/46/) and now this one titled – Arizona.

Meanwhile, the song “Blow” is one of the tracks from Starboy- Wizkid’s SoundMan Extended Play (Vol 1)

ABOUT THE SONG ARIZONA BY WIZKID AND BLAQ JERZEE

I am actually wondering which if the Arizonas the artistes are referring to. According to Wikipedia, Arizona is the 6th largest and the 14th most populous State in the South Western Region of the United States of America. According to Urban Dictionary, Arizona is the devil’s playground where he spends vacation when he wants to roam. English Dictionary says it is a name given to any male or female. So which of the meanings best suits this song? Maybe the name given to a female? What ya think?

So what then is the song “Arizona”really about and what did the artistes say about Arizona?

First of all, this song is complicated and poorly arranged lyrically. I don’t know which is which in terms of verse, chorus and so on. The artistes sang like people that just free styled on a beat. But people wey dey even freestyle still do better when it comes to organizing their lyrics; so menini (As in what really happened?) I don’t think they sat down to write this song; likewise the song “blow”

Now about the song “Arizona”

Having gone through the entire lyrics, I want to believe the song basically talks about women, women’s beauty, sex “in particular”, the effect women have on them, the desire to have more money and fun, the desire to enjoy life with their wealth, and show off their achievements in order to silence their haters. The artistes also use this song to make it clear to some people that they are not on the same level financially and in terms of fame, even if they are relating with them.  But they didn’t reveal if the “level” they were talking about is musically or financially or both.

Moving on

What makes me think this song talks about sex, you may ask? Then you need to listen to Wizkid’s chorus. View some lines below…

Ile ti mo, ile ti su eh” (Morning has broken and night has fallen)

“Me I never still belleful eh” (Yet I am still not filled)”

What Wizkid is referring to here is not food but sex with his woman. It is however not clear if it is lady’s sexual prowess that he describes as heavenly/ beautiful or her beauty. If you ask me, I think it is the former. Sex with this lady is so heavenly that he can’t get enough of her (kikikiki); hence the reason he keeps chasing after her. Although he says this lady is the most beautiful of all the women he has seen, but then that sex also makes her beautiful.

For Blaq Jerzee, in his repetitive style of singing talks his love for money as well as his “Shorty” who makes him happy sexually and otherwise. He says his troubles depart whenever he is around her.

I am wondering what Blaq Jerzee means by “Kalakuta na the palce they legalize Arizona.” Any idea? Kindly fill us in via the comment box…

Although, Kalakuta like we all know is the name of the place established in 1970 by late Afrobeat singer and human rights activist- Fela Kuti, but the place was however burnt down in 1977. Regardless, Femi Kuti his son who is a replica of him rebuilt the place and named it “The New Afrika Shrine.” The New Afrika Shrine is a place basically for entertainment, wild fun, and people have oftentimes said so much immorality goes on there.

So back to the question, what does Blaq Jerzee mean “Kalakuta na the palce they legalize Arizona.”

Is he saying that Arizona is a prostitute and being with that kind of person is permitted in Kalakuta. Just saying though, what ya think?

Is he saying that what was considered criminal was now decriminalize at Kalakuta? In essence, something that is generally illegal has now been legalized at Kalakuta. If that is the case, what could it be? The only thing on my mind is Arizona, and this his Arizona looks like asewo (As in prostitute); no be me talk am (I didn’t say it), Blaq Jerzee said it himself. View below

“Even when I dey with shorty; money dey for my mind”

A shorty according to the English dictionary is a beautiful lady that is sexually available.

Regardless, this song has a solid beat and an engaging rhythm.  You would no doubt move your body to the beat when it comes on the air. It is a fast-tempo beat. The artistes just like they did in the song blow were repetitive which was so unnecessary. At some point, Wizkid’s vocals and that of Blaq Jerzee vocals were not clear. The artists sang in pidgin and in Yoruba; a Nigerian Language.
MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Divine: Beautiful/Heavenly/Delightful; Kalaku: To smoke Indian hemp

Shorty– An attractive young female, especially one who is sexually available (English dictionary)

Ego is an Igbo word in Nigeria that means money
