(+LYRICS+MEANING+TRANSLATION) MUSIC REVIEW: SET AWON? BY SMALL DOCTOR “THE MEANING OF SET AWON?”

IG @ogefashblog.

Why do I feel the title of this song “set awon?” is more popular than the artiste? I feel the question “set awon”  asked by Small doctor got more popular from one person’s mouth to another. In essence, people became more aware of this song when different people started using “Set awon” as a slang and not from even listening to the song from the singer himself.

As a matter of fact, since the release of the song, I am just listening to it for the first time. It was also this year that I found out that the popular word “Set awon?” which people use and most musicians now fuse into their songs originated from Small Doctor. Small Doctor needs to do a video for this song sharpily…

ABOUT THE SONG SET AWON? BY SMALL DOCTOR

Small Doctor is simply amazing with the way he first of all educates listeners especially the young ones with his songs; he is really omo teacher. I am sure you all heard the part he added small numbers (1+1=2; 2+2=4…) and also supplied the correct answer, and the amazing thing was that he sang it in a way that it still flowed with the beat.

Now about the song set awon?

Set awon is both a Yoruba and English word meaning “Whose set? The artiste is kind of asking a rhetorical question and may not be waiting for people to reply him directly. He  calls on people to identify the category or set of great people/professionals they belong to.  If they belong to the good, naughty or bad category of people? If they belong to the gossip category? If they belong yo the rich people’s category? If they belong to poor people’s category? If they belong to the categories of achievers in the country; talk of Dangote, Otedola, Bill Gate and so on. View in the chorus below…

CHORUS

Awon t’on ta cement; set awon Dangote, ai ai (Those selling cement are Dangote’s set)
Awon t’on ta epo; set awon Otedola, ai ai (Those selling oil are Otedola’s set)
Awon ti o ni club; set awon Shina Peller Those that own a club are Shina Peller’s set)
You be OGB for IG set awon baddoshai, eh eh
Awon ti o la plate; set awon pastor Wilson, ai (Those that lick plate are Pastor Wilson’s set)
O’ma ta kalamata; set awon miwa, ai ai
Oma sha igbo; set awon Baba Fela, eh eh (You smoke Indian hemp; you are Baba Fela’s set)
Oma ta motor set awon 606 lobatan (You sell cars; you are 606 set, that’s all)

For Small doctor, he belongs to the category of “Good people”; he is among the “Bill Gate’s” category. So what’s yours?

Lyrically, I love this song; very Punchy and meaningful lyrics. The title of the song “Set awon?” is short and catchy. The song comes in two verses and the chorus was taken four times.

Interestingly, I concur to the line below…

“Egbami o, gbo gbo sisi Eko ti fe di omo olosho (Save me, almost all the ladies in Lagos have become prostitutes)”

Ladies are prostituting one way or the other. They don’t need to stay on the road to do that. Most of these online chats have been rubbished into prostitution. It is not only in Lagos but all over Nigeria.

By the way, I am wondering what Small Doctor means by “Awon tan la plate, set awon Pastor Wilson (Those that are licking plate, are Pastor Wilson’s set”

Let me answer that first, before you share your thought on that particular line and on the song in general. Pastor Wilson really trended last year for his sex video. A video of him sucking a woman’s cunt was all over the media. So, it is now clear that the plate Small doctor may be referring to is “vagina.” Biko (please), who really made this Pastor Wilson a pastor.

The major instruments used in this song include drums and piano. The rhythm flows well with the beat and the artiste was consistent with the style of rhythm. The beat however is not too tuneful, what really popularized the song is the catchy words “Set awon?”

So before I drop this ink, I would like to know, what set y’all belong to…

Take a gander at the lyrics below.
