(+LYRICS+MEANING+TRANSLATION) MUSIC REVIEW: EGUNGUN BE CAREFUL BY OBESERE FT ZLATAN “HERE IS THE MEANING OF THIS SONG +EGUNGUN MEANING” +THIS SONG IS EXTREMELY SEXUAL EVEN THOUGH

IG @ogefashblog

Like I was saying in the caption; this song has a sexual tone even though the artistes advised “Egungun” which means “Masquerade” to be careful.

Moving on, it took me a long time to really figure out Obesere’s lines. And when I finally did with the help of mama aka MAONE (+2348160799747) and Mr. Yem yem; I just shook my head in disbelieve.

WHAT IS THE SONG EGUNGUN BY OBESERE FT ZLATAN ABOUT?

Obesere Akande Abass also known as Omo Rapala or just “Obesere” is a popular fuji artiste in Nigeria while Zlatan is also a Nigerian artiste famous for originating Zancu leg work dance. Obesere who already did the original version of this song over a decade ago felt the remix needed the Zlatan flavor, hence, the reason he featured Zlatan on the song. As at the time of penning down thoughts on this song; the video has not yet dropped.

So, about the song Egungun

Egungun is a Yoruba word in Nigeria that means masquerade. Hence, “Egungun be careful” translates to “Masquerade be careful” So, why is there a need for the masquerade to be careful? A masquerade wears a mask, so it would definitely be difficult for it to see clearly.  View more at Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masquerade_ceremony

Egungun in the context of this song may be referring to human beings. The artistes call on people to be extremely watchful in whatever they do in life so that they don’t get hurt.

For instance, in the intro where Zlatan sang E don happen (It has happened). I don tell am (I have told him). Motor don jam am (A vehicle has knocked him down). Him family don carry am (Now his family has carried him away)”

…shows that human beings don’t listen to instructions,  they are not cautious enough and they don’t see the signs of danger on the wall. When been warned about the danger ahead; they ignore warnings and always want to do what is on their mind even though the end thereof may lead to destruction. Like what happened to the masquerade that did not heed to warnings and later got knocked down by a vehicle.

On the song’s sexual tone; you need to really go through Obesere’s lines. Every single line is related to sex. The entire verse one taken by Obesere was talking about sex with a lady possibly a prostitute; because, olosho means prostitute. The “Omi” which translates to “water” that he used in verse one refers to the fluid which usually comes out during sex. He describes the prostitute as someone that is really hot sexually and also talks about how they had sex non-stop. He says her sexual prowess is wondrous…View the lines below and their meanings…

“Olosho lo ba mi alejo; wo ti se yi si (The prostitute came to visit me; how do we go about this?)
Ki n je iyan ki n je iresi afi omi ojo (She doesn’t eat pounded yam or rice, except water on a daily basis)
Omi ladun omi sororo ojo weriweri (Water is life; the dew that settles or little drops from  rain)
Eyi ara eyi ara ponbele ponbele (Wonders, wonders; totally
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx kan ni sangolo
Ina pin ti, ina pelebe  (She is hot sexually; she is so hot)
Tale yi o a yato; Idaji oni se ko (This evening would be so different; this morning won’t be ending )
Ka jo ma yara, yayo yoya (Let’s roll on each other’s body)”

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Black maria is a police vehicle for transporting prisoners in particular.

Oya or bebeto means human beings are impulsive; they act without thinking through the decisions they made

The song “Egungun” is very melodious.  The beat is dope! It comes in a fast tempo beat. There is no way a song like this would come on air that it won’t get your attention and get you on your feet regardless of the activity you may be engaged in.  However, Obesere’s vocal wasn’t clear. You would wonder if he is a Yoruba guy or not with the way he sang the lyrics.

The lyrics to the song are mostly sexual; the only inspiring lyrics was at the beginning of the song where he advised people to be careful so that they don’t get hurt.  The artiste also used punchy lyrics. The song has only one verse. The chorus was taken twice by Obesere while the post-chorus was taken twice by Zlatan. They sang mostly in Yoruba and fused it with a little pidgin. I love the intro to this song in particular; so catchy and funny!
