WHAT IS THE SONG “UP TO SOMETHING” BY MAYORKUN ABOUT?

The song is about self appreciation. It is about seeing the perfection in your imperfection.

When you say someone is “Up to something” that means the person is planning something secretly; most often it is always something tricky, naughty or something illegal. It also means “devising” as in to create a plan…

In the song, Mayorkun says when ladies call their boyfriends all lovely names and use pet names for them; they are usually up to something. According to him those ladies are only looking for ways to collect more money from their partners to be more materialistic. He says the ladies either use the money to buy silicone to enhance their breast/bum bum or to change their looks completely.

However, the artiste has called on these ladies not to tamper with any part of their body but appreciate their beauty and see the perfection in their imperfection. He makes these ladies realize that there would be someone who is willing to love them the way they are regardless their imperfections.

Interestingly “Up to something” is not the chorus of the song, but it is the predominant word in the song. The artiste used ‘Up to something” in each line of the verses. This tune is very catchy and so melodious I repeat.

But, this line “Egbe ti gbe, gbe gbe gbe” in Mayorkun’s “Up to something”sounded the same with Olamide’s line in the song “Oil and gas” (View the review here – https://ogefash.reviews/2019/06/19/lyricstranslation-music-review-oil-and-gas-by-olamide-choi-this-people-just-wasted-this-beat/). There was also a time he sounded like 9ice, especially in the hook.

The video is cool. I love the video concept. The video was shot in Nigeria. It is an indoor shoot. The ladies that featured in the video were less than 30, but it was shot in a way that made it look like they were over 30; nice directing I must say. There is no way you would stumble on this kind of video and would not be drawn to it; you would be, and you would want to watch it to the end.

Mayorkun also has a voice that is appealing and convincing. He is one artiste you would always want to listen to his to his songs.

The song has two verses. The chorus was taken thrice “Baby you don’t really understand” the predominant word in the song is “Up to something” which the artiste used all through the verses. The artiste basically sang in English and fused with little pidgin.

Meaning of some words

Marama is an Igbo word in Nigeria that means good
