The first time I heard the song “Try me” by Tems, I had these three misconceptions
- That the singer was a male
- That the singer was an American
- That the singer was a teenager
Interestingly, Tems is not a male singer, neither is she an American nor a teenage singer. She is a Nigerian singer with the full name Temilade Openiyi.

ABOUT THE SONG “TRY ME” BY TEMS
First of all, I must say that this song is extremely dope. I love this song; odi (it is) very interesting. I am still surprised that the song is so “Nigerian” yet doesn’t have the “Nigerian feel” or “Styl” if you know what I mean. A typical Nigerian song is sung in pidgin or Yoruba or Igbo and there would always be slangs in the songs; regardless, those songs are always massive hits anyway…
Now, “Try me” by Tems was neither sung in Pidgin, Yoruba or English nor fused with slangs yet the vibe became a massive hit; this song is extremely popular.
The song “Try me” talks about the artiste’s ability to show resilience despite constant efforts of the enemies/haters to bring her down and make her unhappy. It talks about her ability to show resilience in the face of attack, oppression, and hurdles. It talks about her ability to show resilience among people trying her patience. She shows resilience to torture by someone she cares about. She is, however able to break free from the person’s shackles.
The artiste also says people are trying all means to make sure she doesn’t succeed in life, but their efforts are futile. From the entire lyrics, one can tell that she is constantly winning while her attackers are constantly losing.
You would agree with me that the artiste put extreme real feelings into the song. She was so expressive, so emotional while shooting the video. It seemed like it is her personal experience or perhaps there was something she was passing through when she shot the video as her expressions were so real.

I just love this song, it is so melodic and interesting to the ears. The major instruments used in the song include guitar, piano and drums. The artiste has an appealing vocal. The rhythm flows well; there was also consistency in the style of rhythm. I like the video concept, so spectacular. The video has an intro that would draw one’s attention to the whole visual.
The artiste sang in English. The song comes in two verses. The pre-chorus was taken twice while the chorus was taken thrice. The lyrics are well written and organized. I love the choice of vocabulary.
In summary, the song “Try me” by is Tems is interesting, her vocals are very expressive and powerful, the lyrics are punchy; the music was properly composed.
