(+LYRICS +TRANSLATION) MUSIC REVIEW: AM I A YAHOO BOY BY NAIRA MARLEY FT ZLATAN “JEEZ! SEE Y-SH! THIS IS CONFIRM ‘YAHOO-YAHOO’ SONG!”

We are now on IG @ogefashblog

This one that they said EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) arrested Naira Marley and accused him of being a Yahoo boy because he was always working on his laptop, I am also forced to ask if I am a yahoo girl” Because I work fixedly on my laptop day in day out, as in my hands are always on the keyboard, so am I a yahoo girl? Certainly not, I am Just a blogger.

Anyway, they have released Naira Marley sha; adupe fun Olorun (We thank God).

I remember the particular line in this song where he sang “Olopa kole mu wa, tani SARS fe mulo ni bi? (Police can’t catch us, who do they want to catch here)” ; it is funny to me. He was bragging that the police can’t arrest him, but they ended up arresting him. But I love his demonstration sha when he sang that particular line; I keep replaying that part, you can view it at the 29seconds of the video.

Also, in the song, he said he didn’t know SARS “Emi o mo SARS (Me, I don’t know SARS)
SARZ t’emi mo is SARZ on the beat (The SARZ that I know is SARZ on the beat)”; I want to believ he now knows them….

Away from Naira Marley’s arrest, moving on, to be honest, I really don’t know what to make out of this video, those girls and their booty were just thwarting my concentration. Please what exactly was their task in this song? Okay, you would say “To wash the vehicles,” agreed. So why exactly were they on bikini with the camera focusing on their booty? Any answer for that? Biko fill me in ka’m ghota (So I can understand)

Anyway, we shall discuss further about this song right after you have taken a gander at the lyrics below.

THE REVIEW

The artistes claim that they are not Yahoo- Yahoo boys , but Zlatan said there should be no disagreement between him and the maga giving him money. View the line below

“Maga to fun mi l’owo steady se (The maga that is giving me money steadily). Karin wa ko ma daru (May our gathering never scatter.)”

So, what then does he mean by that particular line? Even Google defines “Maga” as a word originated in Nigeria to mean fool. So if he was not talking about Yahoo-yahoo, then what or who was he talking about? So, ko si oro ni be (There is really no word/explanation there). They are just glorifying yahoo, afterall, Naira Marley once said it is Yahoo boyz that are helping the community. I am sure that was the statement that even got him implicated and arrested for a while….

Hmmmm, okay o, moving on

Lyrically, I don’t think they sat down to compose this song, they just jumped on the beat, and recorded whatever word that came out of their mouth. If they had written down the lyrics, they would have known that some lines needed some editing especially that of Zlatan.

The lyrics are in disarray. I don’t even know whether “See me see trouble” is the hook or chorus or something else.  The lyrics are very skeletal.

The song talks about Yahoo Yahoo in the country. Naira Marley uses the song to ask his fans if his lifestyle like an internet fraudster.

The song arrangement: Intro- Hook- Verse 1- (Naira Marley)- Verse 2 (Zlatan)- Hook

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the intro, “See me see trouble” Naira Marley throws a question to the populace asking them if he is an internet fraudster popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo” as he is being accused of by the same populace. It is more of a “rhetorical question”; he just wanted to make a point as well as draw the attention of people, he was not really expecting an answer.

In the hook “See me see trouble” Naira Marley is still asking the populace the same question if he is an internet fraudster just like they accused him of. He further brags that the men in uniform can’t arrest him, perhaps because he is a star or there is no evidence that he is a Yahoo boy.

In the Verse 1 “Won fe she mi bi Fela (They want to treat me like they treated Fela)” he says those accusing him of being an internet fraudster are just trying to find faults in him and crucify him unjustly because he stands for truth just like Fela, Mandela, President Kennedy and MKO Abiola.

He again asks bloggers if he is a yahoo boy and answers himself that he is not, therefore clarifying the air about people’s suspicions of him being an internet fraudster. He says he is just hot. He further calls the government and bloggers thieves probably because some bloggers write fake storis just to get traffic while the former loot money. He also mentions the religious leaders in the country; the artiste believes they are living extra large perhaps because of the large crowd they have in their religious houses.

In the Verse 2,” Oya Yahoo Yahoo” Zlatan basically prays that disagreement shouldn’t come between him and the magas giving him money. He also says people accuse him of doing Yahoo Yahoo and having them as friends just because he is looking dapper.

Infact all the lines of Zlatan show he was encouraging Yahoo Yahoo or some other wrong acts. View some below
“Maga to fun mi lowo steady se (The maga that is giving me money steadily), karin wa ko ma daru (May our gathering never scatter.)”

“Yahoo lawon ore mi se (My friends are Yahoo boys)”

Eni to wa laye yi ti o se Olorun se elo wa wa (Is there anyone on this earth that has not offended God? Go call the person quickly.

Infact that last line looks more like there are some people still committing another kind of crime even if it is not yahoo-yahoo, so why then crucify yahoo-yahoo guyz.

WHAT DOES THE SONG “AM I A YAHOO BOY” BY NAIRA MARLEY FT ZLATAN MEAN

A yahoo boy is someone that is into cyber crime. Internet fraudsters are called Yahoo boys in Nigeria and people that they defraud are called Magas.

Am I a yahoo boy is a song by Naira Marley where he asks a rhetorical question to the populace if he his a yahoo boy since he is constantly accused of by people. But he however answers the question to clarify the air letting people know that he is not a yahoo boy.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Yahoo “Yahoo Yahoo” in Nigeria means people who are into internet fraud; SARS– Special Anti Robbery squad; Maga: Fool, to be played upon

LOCATION

The video was shot in Nigeria; outdoor scenes only.

COSTUME

The five ladies that were featured in this video were on smoking bikinis revealing the gigantic  nature of their back side. Zlatan and others who featured in the video were causally dressed except for naira Marley who was shirtless.

They were looking so ordinary!

SOUND

I don’t even know what to make of Naira Marley’s vocal in this song. He was singing like someone that had something stuffed in his mouth. He was singing through clenched teeth. The predominant instrument in this song is the drum.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Does the video really complement the track or the message of this song? Can’t really tell.

Yes, we saw the police gather round to arrest Naira Marley but he was later released when they did not see anything incriminating in his laptop. But which one come be those girls wey dey show us their back side?

Anyway to the main thing, I love Naira Marley’s expression all through the video, he was very expressive; superb performance. It was as if they really arrested him. He was even looking stressed out. He had this daring look.

Another observation was that he hardly opened his eyes, I don’t mean shine it like Eben did in the song Victory, he was just looking like someone who just woke up from sleep or like someone feeling dizzy.

I loved his gestures @ the 29 seconds of the video where he said “Olopa ko le mu wa”. It is however ironical that the olopa (Police) arrested him for weeks and he could do nothing about it.

Lastly,  this na correct video quality; great cinematography.

CONTROVERSY

After the release of this video, both Zlatan and Naira Marley were arrested. They were arrested by EFCC (The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) on the basis of internet fraud popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo”. But they have been released now…

JUST WONDERING

  • Do police really wear earring like one of them did? Smh sha
  • Naira Marley said he did not know SARS, he ended up knowing them after his encounter with them the other day he was arrested.
