Our celebrity focus for the month of March is one of Africa’s 20 Most Powerful People according to “Forbes” Magazine. He is also 100 most influential Africans in Business according to “New African” Magazine. He goes by the name Anthony Onyemaechi Elumelu fondly called Tony Elumelu.
Tony Elumelu is a well known name in Nigeria and overseas. He is a mentor, investor, economist, philanthropist, africapitalist and entrepreneur. He is a leading and a very successful entrepreneur not only in Nigeria, Africa but worldwide.
He is one business mogul one would gladly miss a three-day meal (Which can be likened to a 3-day-fast) just to have an encounter with him cause surely that encounter with him is certainly an encounter with greatness. A day with him and you will surely acquire vast amount of knowledge on entrepreneurship and networking.
He is an entrepreneur that wastes no time in putting huge sums of money in anything concerning entrepreneurship likewise in investing in entrepreneurs. He has the interest of entrepreneurs at heart. Typical of Aries, he is very supportive of entrepreneurs and gives them a push in all ways.
He is the brain behind Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF). TEF is an African-based/funded philanthropic foundation that on a yearly basis empowers not only Nigerian entrepreneurs but African entrepreneurs that have brilliant business ideas with 100 Million US Dollars making each of the beneficiary receive at least $5000 seed capital, business training, access to mentors and opportunities to network and share a global stage. Tony Elumelu’s reason for setting up the foundation is to drive Africa’s economic development as well as prove that the African private sector can be the major initiator of economic development.
His excellence in matters relating to businesses cannot be overlooked; little wonder he has risen to top ranks over time. His excellence is also evident in his role as chairman of several establishments such as Heirs Holdings (A company that invests in financial services, energy, real estate and hospitality, agribusiness and healthcare sectors), Transnational Corporation of Nigeria aka Transcorp (A publicly quoted conglomerate that has business interests in the agribusiness, energy and hospitality sectors) and one of the leading banks in Africa- United Bank for Africa aka UBA (He transformed UBA from a single country bank to Pan-African institution)
Although Tony Elumelu hails from Onicha-Ukwu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, he was born to the family of Dominic and Suzan Elumelu in Jos, Plateau, Nigeria in the year 1963, three years Nigeria gained its independence. Born with the Zodiac sign Aries -22nd March, the intellectual entrepreneur would be 55 in few days’ time. He is married to a woman with ingenuity and beauty- Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu. Dr Elumelu is a medical doctor and she and her husband have seven children together.
Tony Elumelu is the originator of the term “Africapitalism”. He says Africapitalism is an economic philosophy that embodies the private sector’s commitment to the economic transformation of Africa through long term investments that create both economic prosperity and social wealth.
He is a great personality with no controversies surrounding him despite how influential he is.
He is very imaginative and he is one personality you would wish to be infected with his kind of entrepreneurship skills and accomplishments. His unshakable focus has earned him his stance today.
The Federal government of Nigeria granted him the title of member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR)
