THE REVIEW

Nna Mhen, this song di (is) long, but not boring though. “Excess love” by Mercy Chinwo is one song that indeed moves me and spurs me to keep on appreciating God’s immense love for me and for mankind generally, because indeed, if not for his love and grace; human beings would have greatly perished.

Mercy Chinwo was one of those that took part in the Season 2 of Nigerian Idol sponsored by Pepsi and Etisalat (Now 9mobile) in 2012- Wikipedia says.

The song “Excess love” is not her first song but it happens to be the most popular though. The song is so soul-lifting. It has a way of reinstating the lost hope you have in Christ. I mean, if God has excess love for you, there is no way he will leave you to condemnation.

Moving on, Lyrically, the song comes in two short verses. The verse two is a repetition of verse 1 the only difference was that the last line was changed “All your promises are yea (Yeahhh) and amen. You’re not a man, you never lie”

However, the two verses come in four lines. The chorus took a chunk part of the song; it was sung repeatedly, it was basically the only predominant thing in the song. It was however not boring but melodious. The chorus “Jesus you love me too much o; too much o, too much o, excess love o” was sung eight times, aside the one she sang in the bridge

The bridge lasted for about three minutes; from 3:57 – 6:34

The song is indeed meaningful, inspiring and soul lifting. The lyrics are original and can be associated to the singer alone as I have never heard such lines from other artistes before. It is a well written and arranged song. Though the song is lengthy, but it is solely because of the chorus that was repeated frequently. Each line flows well into another line and also flows well with the rhythm. She sang in English

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the verse 1, “Your love is kind, your love is patient” Chinwo Mercy describes the love the most high God has for the world and the people therein, including her, as kind and patient. God’s love is enduring; he is compassionate and not cruel like man. She also says God makes her over happy and peaceful; as in he gives her overflowing joy and peace. She calls God a marvelous God because her life feels brand new. He has washed away her sins; she is now like a new creature without sin, guilt, doubt or fear; old things have passed away.

In the chorus, “Jesus you love me too much o; too much o, too much o, excess love o” the artiste says the love Jesus has for her is so much that it is even surplus.

The verse 2 is the same with verse1, the only line that is different is “All your promises are yea (Yeahhh) and amen. You’re not a man, you never lie” the artiste says Jesus never reneges on his words like men that promise but do not keep to their promises; he will do that which he has promised to do. He brings his words to actuality and doesn’t tell a lie which is common to men.

In the bridge, “Too much o, too much o, too much o, excess love o” the artiste shows reverence to God and emphasizes God’s love. She says what he has done and what he keeps doing. She is in awe of God’s love for her. The lord is sensitive to her desires and he is always concerned about her.

MEANING OF THE SONG “EXCESS LOVE” BY MERCY CHINWO

To know what the song ‘Excess love” means, let us start by defining the word “Excess”. According to the “#English” dictionary, excess means beyond sufficiency or limit or exceeding what is usual. Love on the other hand by the same dictionary is a profound and caring affection towards someone.

Hence the song excess love by Mercy Chinwo means that God’s love upon her life and that of mankind is excess, surplus, over-abundant, superfluous, overflowing; basically, all the synonyms of excess.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Excess: Surplus; too-much, overflowing

Unconditionally: Without condition, no buts, not give and take…

To renege– Means to go back on one’s words or to fail to fulfill a promise. To fail to do what you said you would do; to renege on something.

LOCATION

The video was shot in Nigeria. Indoor scenes were used majorly for the shoot; a studio precisely.

COSTUME

So contumely! She was really radiating in the fabrics. Or should I say I could see the glory of God truly radiating in her. She wore a black lace gown, a sky-blue lace gown, a wine satin gown and a white satin gown. Her jewelries her also beautiful and indeed complemented her outfit. Well costumed indeed!

SOUND

It is a slow-tempo song. The major instruments used were the piano and guitar; these made the song pleasant to the ears. The drum was later introduced in the second verse though. There was also consistency in the style of rhythm. Verse one had four lines likewise verse 2. The singer chose a memorable line for the chorus which was accompanied with a memorable beat.

I don’t know if she was the only singer, but if there were back-up singers, I totally love their voices; so united. As in, they all sang in unison. They did not go screechy, not that they tried to raise the key though. She was quite expressive with her lyrics too.

A melodious song indeed!

VIDEO PRODUCTION

I was enjoying the video, until I just saw nails everywhere. Why all the nails if I may ask? Was it used to hold the decoration or it is fashion? Okay, if it is former it should have been hidden and if it is the latter, I really don’t like this type of fashion.

Infact, at some point, I thought it was displayed to show that Jesus was nailed to the cross, but there is no line in the song referring to how Jesus was nailed to the cross. Even if there was one, that wouldn’t be the way to go about it. Anyway, that is by the way, but the video is cool except the nails that were so glaring.

Yeah, that reminds me, also at some point it was like the light was about to blind my eyes; excessive lightning or something. But then, Mercy’s ability to be expressive helped in covering all flaws. She was so very expressive. I love the scenes with the white background more. She was well styled in terms of cloth, make up and jewelry.

JUST WONDERING

  • Why those nails
  • Why was the name of her stylist written in faint letters
