Awon enia mi, abi e ri nkannkan ni? (My people, do you not see something ni), that I am seeing. Nawa O, this one don pass the popular biblical story of Ruth that Yorubas in Nigeria refer to as “Ruth Abokoku.” When translated to English, it means “Ruth- the one who dies with the husband”

They call Ruth “Abokoku”  because after her husband’s death and knowing fully well that her mother-in-law-Naomi had no child or husband again, she still refused to go. She remained a widow in the house and vowed never to leave, although  she later married Boaz.

Now (Clearing throat), linking the above story to Simi’s song, you can see why I said “E don pass Ruth Abokoku.”  As in, she was just all on over that guy; she neither gave him a breathing space nor allowed his eyes to wander around for half a second “Kai! Bobo ye o ti get e truly”

So did she give him “lovin” like her chorus says? To me, beni o (Yes)! From the beginning of the song to the end; the public display of affection, the cuddling and the intimidating look to chase “dem” other girls “Abi kilo wa kiri?” like she asked the other girls in verse 2. If you don’t agree to “Simi’s  kind of lovin and you feel she over did it, let us know via the comment box…

Meanwhile, the lyrics comes up next, take a gander at the lyrics below…

Song Duration: 3 Minutes 40 Seconds

THE REVIEW

The video kicked off  with a catchy beat which was accompanied with a choreography by Simi and two other ladies; nice dance. The song was done in this format- “Intro- verse 1- chorus- verse 2- chorus- verse 3- chorus- outro. Verses 1 and 2 have 14 lines each while verse 3 has 8 lines

Lyrically– I am trying to decipher as well as connect this line to the song  “You make a bad man need inhaler”

However, the song is meaningful. It is a love song. It is about a girl who is crazy in love with a guy and shows him immense love in order not to lose him to “dem” other girls.

The lyrics are well composed and detailed, not cheesy like some artistes’ lyrics

She sang mostly in English and then fused it with Yoruba “Omo oti get me” “Abi ki lo wa kiri?” and Pidgin “ Walahi, E reach make you do guy” “You see why the ladies dey shine their eye”

BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG

In the verse 1 “Is like you don’t even know your body is so fine” Simi is so love-struck and talks about the strong effect her guy has on him. Everything about the guy;  smile,  face, body is mesmerizing and has so captured her body, soul and mind. She desires more of him and says she may not let him out once they are together in her place. The guy is always on her mind, so she  talks about him frequently as well as boast to her friends how flawless he is “Baby you are a ten over ten (You are a ten over ten)”

In the verse 2 “Is like you don’t even know, baby you too fine”, the artiste is drooling over her guy, especially his body and looks. She is captivated by his looks which she feels other girls too are and the reason they also want to have him. She however tells the other  girls to back off that there is no vacancy because he is her man; he is taken

In the verse 3 “Baby come now no be later, I’m waiting on you like a waiter”, the artiste implores her guy to come around soon that she has been waiting. She looks forward to having a dance with the one that captivates her.

In the chorus “Am giving you ‘lovin’”, the artiste says she shows her guy love every time and would do anything he wants just to please him. She also assures him of her availability anytime he wants her around.

MEANING OF THE SONG “LOVING” BY SIMI

It is a love song whereby the artiste is so love struck. She cuddles her guy, moves around with him and displays her love for him publicly so “dem” other girls do not snatch him away from her.

MEANING OF SOME WORDS

Loving: To show affection; Omo o ti get me: Baby you have gotten/captured me

Brag: To boast about someone; Fine: Good looking or attractive

Shine their eye: Being able to notice things properly

Walahi: To swear to God; No be tinini: Not a small thing, call/ring

Drive one crazy: To be crazy about someone; Take one’s breath away: to astonish someone

Abi, ki lo wa kiri?: What are they looking for all about

Waiter: A female attendant who serves customers at their tables in a restaurant, café or similar, someone who waits for somebody

COSTUME

Nice, could have been better. They were clothed in white shirts which they folded to make it look like crop top. They also wore mini skirts in Ankara fabric (Perhaps, it just looks like ankara). The guy wore casual- a t-shirt and jeans.

LOCATION

The video shot in Lagos, Nigeria. They used both outdoor and indoor scenes (Apartments, restaurant and streets)

SOUND

Soulful! The beat drums enhanced the beauty of the song. She was consistent with the flow of rhythm. However the instrumental was not varied. At some point, her vocal was not clear especially in the verse 3. Perhaps, the beat overshadowed her vocal…

VIDEO PRODUCTION

The video indeed complemented the track. Simi was really expressive; her expression explained it all that she was indeed love struck. Infact, I am sure Nollywood or Hollywood already has a script for her.

However, that intense light coming from the window side wasn’t too good. That quite distracted the dance flow. It is evident when you look at their faces as well. Not too superb cinematography.

I love their dance, great! Although,  it reminds me of  secondary school days.

JUST WONDERING

  • Those girls might have missed their real destination because of the guy. Infact e b lyk they were just following the guy. When they got to the restaurant, they could not even order anything, they just kept on staring at him
  • Was the last scene really necessary
