(+LYRICS)MUSIC REVIEW: BLESSINGS ON ME BY REEKADO BANKS “IF ONLY MELINDA GAYLE (TARAJI P) IN ACRIMONY DID WHAT THIS WOMAN DID!”
Awwwww! I am so in love with Reekado’s songs. I love this “blessings on me” song. Honestly, I have been hearing this song on radio stations and from street DJ’s but never for once knew that the voice behind the song is Reekado Banks. So, when I saw it in the catalogue of songs to be reviewed, I was so excited and quickly jumped on the song. His songs are always dope and I have always wanted to review his songs. When “Ogefash” Blog kicked off officially, his coveted songs such as “Oluwa ni” “Easy” and “Like” were already old, so we just had to do newer songs.
But, I don’t know why I do have this feeling that I may still review one of his old songs, may be “Like” ft Tiwa Savage.
Okay, that is by the way, like you know, we always want you to take a gander and have a feel of the lyrics to any song before the main review. Njoyyy!

MUSIC REVIEW
Thank goodness the song “Blessings on me” is short; just about 3 minutes 39, replaying the track with ease would not be a problem.
By the way, it seems like all artistes in the country are now doing prayer songs. There is Chinko Ekun ft Lil Kesh and Zlatan Ibile in the dope song Able God (You can view able God review here @www.ogefash.reviews) amongst others.
Meanwhile, I have noticed that Reekado Banks just has a way of including in his song, lines that have to do with blessing his mummy. Remember in his song “Oluwa ni” he said “…Small boy buy im mama house” This goes a long way to show that he is so fond of his mum and appreciative of her for all her efforts; his mum must have really gone through a lot just to see him get to where he is today. However, it also makes it look like he is a product of single parent; perhaps his dad absconded or something.
Lyrically, I am so loving the lyrics! He sang the chorus four times and the pre-chorus three times. There are two verses in the song; the verse 1 has four lines while the verse 2 has 8 lines. He sang basically in Pidgin but fused it with little Yoruba. Some of the Yoruba words he used are “Oluwa” “tele tele” “awon”…
This is indeed a very straightforward song; easily comprehensible, inspiring and very meaningful. You can relate one line to another line and to the entire verse and the song in entirety. More like a story-like verse talking about his days of affliction where no one wanted to associate with him, but when his story eventually changed and he became wealthy, they all wanted to associate with him.
WHAT IS THE SONG “BLESSINGS ON ME” BY REEKADO BANKS ABOUT?
The word blessings mean to have an abundance of good things. Hence, the artiste uses this song to implore God to bless him abundantly so he can fulfill that strong desire he has to pamper or better still take good care of his mummy. He implores God to bless him abundantly so that people’s constant mockery of him when he had nothing will change and he will be celebrated. This is evident when he sang “See dem call me tear tear, no be Kanye tear tear” In essence, he was wearing torn clothes not as fashion like Kanye’s style, but because he was poor and couldn’t afford good clothes.
BREAKDOWN OF THE SONG
In the chorus, “Father Father, I want to, want to, hammer hammer (Eh eh eh)” Reekado Banks says he wants to really hit it big as in make a lot of money so he can pamper/take good care of his mummy. He therefore implores God to look his way and bless him abundantly.
“Spoil” in the context of the song doesn’t mean decay but to pamper someone.
In the verse 1, “Throwback to the tele tele, see them show me pepper”
The artiste says, in the past, a lot of people used to doubt his talent and ability to be successful. He said he really suffered; people insulted him a lot as well as used his torn cloth to make jest of him. However, when his ship arrived, all those that had doubted him and looked down on him now wanted to attach themselves or associate with him at all cost “As I don dey collect, see dem want dey connect”
In the pre-chorus, “Oluwa, shower your blessings on me, blessings on me, yoh yoh” the artiste implores God to bless him abundantly
In the verse 2, “Dem full for the twitter, steady commenting on insta” is a continuation of what he sang about in Verse 1. The artiste says from the comments of people on Instagram and twitter, he could tell that some doubted his talent and never believed he would someday be successful in the music career. Rather than accept his new identity as a successful gifted musician, they instead start envying him and try to taint his image by calling him bad names such as “Thief”. This he says in the line “Ole, ole bawo? Dem start to dey beef am”
He further says that no matter how angry the enemies get about his success, his shining and outstanding work will continue to make him happy. He says he wants to be successful or be a terrific footballer like Christiana Ronalo.

SOUND:
Melodious tune! Clear vocals! Terrific beat drums! Reekado was also expressive as he sang the lyrics. He was consistent with the style of rhythm. I love the interlude; he didn’t eat up or fill up the entire beat with lyrics. I really love that.
LOCATION
It was shot in Nigeria. Indoor and Outdoor shoot. They used a field majorly where the young and adult boys played football. Also, most of Reekado’s scenes were shot on the field.
They also used an apartment; the building where the family of three lived as well as where the sport team went to sign a deal.
COSTUME
Terrific. It was basically a suit affair. Reekado was looking well suited in the red suit. The matching shirt even brought out the beauty of the suit. His costume was just the best. At some point he wore casuals though.
The sport team also wore suitable sport wears and footwear. Even, from the intro, their dressing showed that they were not well to do. Nice costuming!
VIDEO PRODUCTION
A great video concept! Terrific cast! Terrific lightning as well! The video complements the track. All those that featured in the song were really expressive; they interpreted their roles very well and this of course made the video interesting to watch.
STORY IN THE VIDEO
Tells the story of a family of three; Husband, wife and son. The couple is having a financial challenge. The husband perhaps has no job and rather than go out to search for one, he is always sleeping or worrying about his lack of money. His inability to take care of the family worries his wife especially when they have a son (but their son cute o) So, one day, while the husband is sleeping as usual, she wakes him up to complain about their son’s health or inability to feed well. She urges him to do something to bring in money to the house. This doesn’t go down well with the husband who absconds from his family in the night when they are all sleeping. When the wife wakes up, he finds out that her husband already abandoned her. She takes full responsibility of their son, becoming the mother and father.
One day, she notices that her son has got the football skills. She retrieves the money she hid under the bead and takes him to where his football skills can be honed. She pleads with the coach to manage her money and help train her child. As the boy grows playing football, his skills are truly honed. One day, an external coach (The external coach happens to be his father-the man that abandoned his wife and son. He is now a big-wig in the sport industry) comes around and immediately falls in love with the boy’s football skills; oblivious that he is son. So he shows interest in the boy, studies him and later connects him with big-wigs in the sport world. The boy becomes successful and owes the success to God and mum. He appreciates his mum with a car gift and then introduces the external coach who has also been instrument to his success to his mum.
The mother sighting the husband again is irritated for abandoning her and his son. Unable to stand him, she walks away and her son follow her
