The sound of the name of our “October Celebrity Focus” is as powerful as the bearer. He is an incomparable industrialist; one who doesn’t discriminate. He is assiduous, irrefutably humble, easy going, a pace setter, a role model to many, mentor, and a good example to all those who aspire to be successful in the business world today. Just like Abraham in the bible, he is also a “father of many nations”; he is indeed extremely blessed. He is always active, and like Olamide said “Ori mi ko le hibernate” in his song “Motigbana”, truly Dangote’s can’t hibernate. He is neutral to all irrespective of their tribe, colour, religion or country. He is one of the few rich men in the country and in the continents of Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America free from controversies. The only time you get to hear his name on the news is on matters relating to his new project or another of his numerous philanthropic works. He has spent close to 30 billion naira in the last two years on charitable courses in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.
He is a huge employer of labour. He is the president of the well renowned and largest corporation in Africa- The Dangote Group. His name is Alhaji Aliko Dangote. He is still the richest Alhaji/person in Nigeria, in Africa, richest black man and 43rd richest person in the world.

Dangote as he is fondly called was born into the family of Mariya Sanusi Dantata and Mohammed Dangote in the month of April in Kano state. Dangote had always had an affinity for trading since childhood. Hence, when he was in the primary school, he bought various items such as cartons of sweet and sold to people in his school in exchange for Naira. However, when his father died, he went to live with his grandfather- Alhaji Sanusi Dantata who was also keen about trading. This of course helped sharpen Dangote’s business skills. Recognizing the importance of education, he went to study Business Administration at the Al Azhar University, Cairo in Egypt, and thereafter returned to Nigeria to work with his uncle- Sani Dangote who later gave him a loan of 500, 000 @ the age of 21 to start his business. Dangote through his zeal, determination, knowledge and assiduousness was able to multiply the money in uncountable folds.

Dangote Group owned by him is a multi-billion Naira company soaring high and has overtime proven that it has come to stay. It has its headquarters in Union Marble House, 1 Alfred Rewane Road, Lagos. The group has provided employment for tons of graduates through the sundry of businesses it operates. SOME OF DANGOTE’S PHILANTHROPIC ACTS
Donated 150 million naira to stop the spread of Ebola in Nigeria during Goodluck’s tenure (2014); Donated billions to victims of flood disaster (Kogi State, Sokoto, Oyo, Pakistan); Gave millions through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support the Nigerian Federal Government’s response to measles outbreak; provided assistance to victims of communal clash and also helped victims of insurgency in the North East of Nigeria; donated millions to victims of explosion in Republic of Congo and million to reduce famine in Niger Republic;empowers women;spends billions of Naira on the rehabilitation of various Nigerian universities etc.

Dangote Foundation– Set up to exterminate poverty across the African continent and beyond. It gives scholarships. The foundation also reduces the number of lives lost to malnutrition and disease; to fight Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in children.

Dangote Academy– Trains young technicians and craftsmen that are expected to boost the manpower needs of the nation’s industries for a year. The trainees are given a monthly stipend between N20,000 and N60, 000. They are also accommodated and fed for the duration of the 12-months. They plan on recruiting 75 percent of them after the training. Dangote Academy is worth about N1 billion.

Dangote has won multiple awards in recognition of his terrific contributions to the growth of the Nigerian economy and his philanthropic acts.

PROJECTS
Dangote Group has plans to set up world-class projects in new realms such as Rice
Farming, Sugar Farming, Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, Fertilizer, Gas Pipeline, Energy, among others.

To establish a truck assembly plant in Lagos to produce 10,000 trucks annually with a capital outlay of $100 million. The project is a JV with Sinotruck, a Chinese automotive leader.

In partnership with First E&P, the Group is embarking on an East West Offshore Gas Gathering Pipeline System (EWOGGS) that will change Nigeria’s energy landscape. It will boost domestic gas demand and supply.

Dangote Foundation and the Bank of Industry (BOI) signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU), to make available the sum of N5 billion for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) which is estimated to create about one million jobs directly, when it gains momentum. Thus impacting the lives of up to 250,000 micro-entrepreneurs, through job-creation, spread across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.

He’s currently building a $9 billion dollar oil and gas refinery in Nigeria.
