(+LYRICS+MEANING) MUSIC REVIW: KANA BY OLAMIDE FT WIZKID

A HEAD WITH SOMEONE ELSE’S BODY…I FEEL THAT I CAN PRACTICALLY HEAR THE AUDIO SCREAMING…ARA MI  DA?

Kana is a song by top Nigerian artistes, Wizkid and Olamide though the video does not feature the former.

So, I had to go over the lyrics of this song and watch the video countless times in order to decipher what the two artistes mean in the song Kana. Well, guess what? It was pretty hard picking out a theme from this song because Olamide’s chorus and Wizkid’s Chorus have different messages, likewise Olamide’s verse, so I was confused. Infact, where the confusion intensified was when the…; you know what? Let us make you feel the lyrics first, and then we will continue with the review just after the lyrics.

THE REVIEW

So, I had to go over the lyrics of this song countless times in order to decipher what the two artistes mean in the song Kana. Well, it was kind of hard to pick out a theme from this song because Olamide’s chorus and Wizkid’s Chorus have different messages, likewise Olamide’s verse, so I was confused. Infact, where the confusion intensified was when the video to the song dropped. It entirely has a different theme from the whole lyrics of the song and I am like, who is the brain behind the visual concept? Ain’t talking about the video director, because I believe video directors direct based on whatever material is on ground, perhaps I am wrong, kindly fill me in, in the comment box.

To be honest, I love their Choruses because they both carry a message, even though the choruses were long. Wizkid’s chorus talked about spending money on a lady, making ladies have extreme fun and making them enjoy life in a way that they have never done before. He also called those thinking of wooing a lady without having enough money a zombie. View Wizkid’s chorus here “Ko s’owo l’owo, o fe pe sisi, Zombie o, you be zombie, yeah (You don’t have plenty money and you want to woo a girl; you are a zombie). “Ifunaya t’oba wa o ma jaiye o, o ma jaiye ye, yeah (Ifunanya if you come, I will take you out and make sure you enjoy life/world)…”

Olamide’s chorus talked about his ability to quickly understand a girl’s body gesture for sex and making swift moves to quickly get down with her; have sex with her. View chorus here <strong“O n p’ariwo bi tekno o n ko pana (She is shouting just like Tecno; she is singing Pana), O fe je International banana (She wants to eat international banana), “Emi ti mo ti gbo ti mo ti kana (Me that I am sharp and I have gotten her signal), Oya make we go for the one corner, one corner (Quickly, let us go to one corner)”

Two major choruses with different theme; that is a sure way of confusing millions of fans.

Now, did the choruses flow with the only one verse in the song? No is the answer? I am sure the chorus “which is like the theme of the song” is looking for its original verses “which is the main body of the song”. I can literally hear it saying “Ara mi da?”

View Olamide’s verse here…

“T’alo je ke wole sinu gate, is it my mummy o, my mummy (Who allowed you in, is it my mummy?) You say you love me aunty Kate, omo na story o, na story…”
It would have been nice if there was one major chorus and if Olamide’s verse centered on the chorus that was picked.

BREAKDOWN OF EACH LINE

Wizkid’s intro lines “If I tell you do like this” basically means a girl submitting to him and doing whatever style he wants her to do; sexually

Wizkid’s chorus “Ko s’owo l’owo, o fe pe sisi, Zombie o, you be zombie, yeah (You don’t have plenty money and you want to toast a girl; you are a zombie)” basically talks about making a girl have extreme fun, making her go to/see expensive places she has never been before. He goes on to vouch that the ladies will enjoy the kind of life the richest man in the world-Bill Gate enjoys, if they cruise with him. He also calls those guys who are thinking of wooing a lady but don’t have plenty money a zombie.

While Olamide’s chorus “O n p’ariwo bi tekno o n ko pana (She is shouting just like Tecno; she is singing Pana)” talks about understanding a girl’s sexual body gestures and making swift moves to get down with the girl. As in have sex with her.

Wizkid’s intro line actually flows with Olamide’s chorus because they both talk about sex

Finally, the beginning of Olamide’s verse “T’alo je ke wole sinu gate, is it my mummy o, my mummy (Who allowed you in, is it my mummy?)…” all we have were just some disjointed lyrics. Infact, it seems he forgot what he sang in the chorus, while it seems like Olamide was far away when Wizkid sang his chorus too. In essence, I just can’t really connect some of the lines in Olamide’s verse to his chorus. It is really brain racking trying to decipher what is not actually there. Well except the latter part of the verse “O n la mi bi sugar, o n pe mi ni honey o,  my honey (She licks me like sugar and calls me honey). Pamurobo to rogoto, baby get down oya tongolo (Come, let’s get down together)…”

Lyrically, the song comes in just one verse with a repetition of the chorus. The song lacks fleshy lyrics; very weak, shallow, repetitive and confusing. Its duration of 4 minutes 54 seconds only consisted of repeated Pre-chorus/Chorus by Olamide and Wizkid. The long repeated Chorus by Olamide came up two times and while that of Wizkid was three times

The verse– Even though the lines in the verse are not interrelated, they also look disjointed.  He first talks about some unwanted guests, he then showcases his money and boasts that it is real currency and not paper he is spending. Then he calls out a lady who claims to love him and pants her like some unreal lady, he goes on to talk about a lady that is driving him crazy that he wants to get down with, that is have sex with.

T’alo je ke wole sinu gate, is it my mummy o, my mummy (Who allowed you in, is it my mummy?) I thought Olamide was talking about his rival, but then that is not possible as those people were already in the place before Olamide and his gang got there. So the question is who was Olamide talking about?

Paper ko la n na, omo na money o, na money (What we are spending is real currency, not money) Here he shows off his money and boasts that it is real currency and not paper (Seems like a personal message to some haters best known to Olamide)

Pamurobo to rogoto, baby get down oya tongolo (Come and let us get down together)
Drive me crazy make me kolo, I dey feel like I shack ogogoro (You make me crazy and it seems like I am high on a drink) This line basically talks about having sex

The song though talks about a lady but seriously has different themes, from sex with women, to spending extravagantly on a woman, to a guy having money before he thinks of wooing a lady…

CODED WORDS

Banana- When artistes say banana, they mean a man’s male organ.

Tongolo– When artistes say tongolo, they mean the word sex

WHAT DOES THE SONG KANA MEAN

The word “KANA” used by the artistes may mean their ability to quickly understand a girl’s sexual moves or better still whatever signal she is using to draw a man’s attention to her. It may mean the ability to quickly understand a girl’s body gestures or language and acting swiftly towards this.

From the Chorus sang by Olamide, he was basically talking about being sharp to understand a girl’s body language for sex and moving swiftly to get down with her. Even, his body gestures from the 3minutes of the video say it all…

However, in totality, the song does not only mean the above. It also means having enough money to spend on a woman, take her to places that will marvel her or better still, give her the kind of treatment enjoyed only by the richest man in the world-Bill Gate; just like Wizkid sang in his chorus

LOCATION

It was shot in a place looking like a restaurant- Xuang Huong restaurant. The restaurant also has a club.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Infact, it seems like Olamide may be interested in some kind of action movie. I thought it was only horror movie after the release of “Science student video” (By the way, science student has been reviewed on our blog, view it here http://www.ogefash.reviews), but after watching this, I think Hollywood should give the next action movie script to Olamide, he may just nail it.

The production is tight, great lighting, great visual effects @ the explosion. I don’t think there is any Nollywood movie where they have done any explosion like that before; I guess they need to meet with Sesan, the director of this video. But if there is any, please fill me in, in the comment box

However, with an interesting theme the video may present, it just doesn’t fit into this song.

It is a nice concept though, shot like a real movie from the beginning to end. Even from the beginning of the video where “A film factory production”, was displayed on the screen, which was accompanied with a nice background tune, you would be pushed to watch the video. Olamide should on his own shoot a full movie for this while Hollywood is still fixing a script for him. He was really expressive in this song, though there were some obvious errors or should I say bombshells.

For instance at the 3minutes 58 seconds of the song; where the squad Olamide and his girls had robbed pointed a gun at him, they did not shoot. Even when he took his hands to the back to get his gun, they still did not shoot. Whoever does that? They kept pointing their guns at him till he brought out his gun (Even when Olamide brought out his gun, they were still looking at him), and started shooting.

THE STORY IN THE VIDEO

So, the video tells a story, we will break it down for you. Three beautiful ladies who belong to Olamide’s squad enter a Chinese restaurant with a fully loaded gun to attack another squad while they are gambling. They cart away with their money. The other group discovers that Olamide is behind it so they go after Olamide and his girls. They find them in the same club they are in and a gun battle ensues between them. This leaves most of them dead except Olamide and one female from his squad who were able to escape with a bag loaded with money.

COSTUME: Skimpy, revealing, short, tight. It looks like a black costume party; that was practically the only glaring colour worn by the major characters.

SOUND– Nice beat with expressive vocals.

JUST WONDERING

  • Why the female leader did not wear her own mask.
  • They entered a restaurant in the morning with guns and those people after sighting them did not even flinch, like seriously, how now?
  • So, from the video, are the artistes saying that what they mean by “gbe saiye” is to make ladies do dubious things.
  • The squad that Olamide and his girls robbed had the chance to shoot first, but they did not. Imagine oo, they just pointed a gun at an enemy and did not shoot. Even when Olamide was taking out his gun, they still did not fire. They were staring at him until he pulled the trigger first. I am wondering, did he use voodoos on them or what
