(+LYRICS+ TRANSLATION) TO ONYEOMA BY OLAMIDE AND PHYNO THIS SONG SHOULD HAVE BEEN TITLED “ONYEEGO” “YEM EGO” NOT “ONYE OMA”

Fist of all, I don’t know why the artistes made this song and the video look like “onyeoma” means someone that gives people money; smh though.

“Onyeoma” when translated to English means a good person. Being a good person is not only when you give money. You can give millions of naira and still have no good intention, so, how does that make you a good person?

Referring to someone as a good person shouldn’t be because the person gives money to others. Do you know the motive behind the giving?

Olamide and Phyno don’t think so. According to them, a good person in this song is someone that gives you money. They should have just titled it “Yem ego” or “Onye ego” .

In all honesty, what I could decipher from this video song is that, with money you can do and undo, money makes the world go round or better still, money is the solution to all problems.

If you even watch the video carefully, the rich man’s scene precisely, some guys without doing anything, felt they were entitled to the rich man’s money.

Though, the rich man is a stingy man and always entice people with his money, but never gives or gives little.

Also that scene where a tenant rather than pay his rent , gave some able bodied men money to throw out the landlord . So you can see that it is more like, money makes you be in control even if you are not a good person.

Well, that is by the way, let us go through the main review, but first, here are the lyrics to the song “Onyeoma” by Phyno and Olamide

MUSIC REVIEW

So, the artistes said they considered the fans, hence the reason girls did not shake their bombom in the song…

That shows that these celebrities always know what fans are saying about them, even if they do not respond. Thanks ooo, for considering your fans.

INTRO

What a boring intro. They were not looking energetic, even their voices were so dry/so unappealing, for Christ sake, how could they have made the opening of the song in such form.

vlcsnap-2018-06-19-20h10m15s150

Even if there was no beat playing in the background, their dialogue should be interesting ; if they were to act in nollywood, ghanawood, kanyawood, bollywood, hollywood and all the moviewood or the movie in the wood of each country, they had be awful actors.

Olamide ‘ni tie’ was just talking like one alaye, even the way he was “ga~paing” bross we know you are boss, there is no need showing it again. Phyno ‘ne me dika’ someone wey put water in his mouth.

Lyrically, the song was done in three different languages. First is Igbo, Yoruba and English. Very meaningful lyrics as it means doing good to people today as table may turn and you may need their help someday. I love the flow of words but each line was independent especially Olamide’s. Infact his was like a proverb . The constant repetition of the chorus made it lengthy.

It comes in two verses both done by Olamide and Phyno but with Phyno taking the lead.

The song was pretty long and they exhausted the beat with their lyrics, there was hardly any moment they allowed listeners to feel the beat of the song without saying some words. A song is more interesting if the beat is allowed to play for a while without words being sang on the beat.

In verse 1, Phyno talks about people who are in the position to help others to show help since they are the ones in money at that moment. He also says becoming successful is not by their muscle but by the grace of God .He goes further to tell rich people to take care of him as he will take care of them later. He also asks God to bless him like he did to his peers.

In verse 2, Olamide is positive about becoming wealthy in the future and he says he would party and show people love.

He was more proverbial in his lyrics. “Chicken no dey fly for night, bar beach water no dey dry, bros your pocket no go dry, give me raba make I smile”.

The lyrics to this song are original. They are different from the conventional lyrics we use to hear from the Nigerian artistes..

WHAT DOES THE SONG ONYEOMA MEAN

Onyeoma means to be a good person; that is to do good to others which can be in cash and kind. However, the two artistes, though they titled the song “Onyeoma” focussed more on the aspect of money.

The song is about the importance of the rich helping others as tables may turn someday.

The song is also about being a cheerful giver.

“Be a cheerful giver “Spray me dollar dollar eh eh, pounds sterling ah ah, my cheerful giver-Onyeoma, onyeoma, onyeoma”

Finally, it shows the essence of helping people who are in need. Some people misbehave when they dont have money. This Phyno sang here, “Imana (You know) grace of God, If no be God, wetin I for do oh, I for don lose my cool oh”

Also we can see the scene where a girl who was sick”” became fit when given money. The guy that attempted sucide immediately stopped the attempt when money was given to him. Hmm, ‘what money can do’, another title that would have been perfect for the song.

LOCATION

It was shot both indoor and outdoor. A studio was used to achieve the indoor purpose while various locations comprising the street, parks were used to achieve the outdoor purpose

COSTUME

Just costume. Olamide and Phyno wore black trousers. Olamide wore a green t~shirt while Phyno wore a dark top. Other costumes were the police uniform, the traditional wears by those having a wedding.

THE VIDEO PRODUCTION.

The video was inspired by fans. Not extremely spectacular. Too many stories, there were just some unnecessary scenes.

THE STORY IN THE VIDEO

The video starts with both Olamide and Phyno discussing the kind of concept they should use for Onyeoma video at CP Studio. Olamide suggests that they use Flavour’s concept but Phyno felt it wont be too good for a song like Onyeoma.

Olamide then suggests that they check instagram to see what is trending and pick an idea for the video. Someone hands Olamide the phone and they both check what is happening on instagram.

The first story is about the rich man that is extremely tight-fisted. He shows off his wealth but would give you peanut (So, I am wondering, was the rich man supposed to be dashing them money)

This same rich man, a group of boys wash his car for him, but he doesn’t give them good money worth their service, these guys are disappointed but let it go. Another day, they stumble on the man and hail him. The man brings out a whole lot of money but ends up giving them only a note. A young guy who sees how desperate those guys are for money, eventually sprays them money.

Thesame rich man sees a beautiful young girl being harassed by a guy. The guy wanted to steal her bag. The man parks his car and in anger, he pours the money on the guy; the money he did not give those that worked for him, then he carries the girl in his car. The guy packs the money excitedly.

Next, is the girl that is sick and lying on the couch. Immediately her friend comes in with lots of money and sprays on her, she quickly recovers.

Next is the scene where the little child is spraying his mum money and I am like “how na?” A child that the mother ought to be finding ways to send to school is jubiliating that the child is spraying her money. Somehow sha. Well e better as they use paper, if not, Nigerian for don finish dem.

A guy buys a house for his mum and sprays her money as well.

Next is a traditional wedding between Mr. And Mrs. Onyeoma, it was written on the screen. How do we know they are onyeoma, they are just appearing for the first time.

Some group of men while drinking suddenly start spraying one another money.

A guy that is given quit notice doesn’t leave the house. When the landlord comes around to eject him with some tough guys, he gives them money and those people turn against the landlord as they throw the landlord himself out (So, how is that onyeoma?)

A guy who wants to commit suicide is sprayed money by his friends, immediately he rethinks his suicide mission.

A man returns home expecting food, but the wife demands money from him first before he can get the food, he gives her money and when he opens the microwave, he finds an empty plate (this scene was totally irrelevant)

Some group of people were gambling after which they started spraying money on ram.

A police man stops Charles Okocha and he is about to arrest him but when he sprays him a lot of money, the man forgets himself as he packs the money. Okocha speeds off bringing to the police man’s realization that he already let go someone he wants to arrest.

Let me give them concept– They should have just focussed on one story and built it. For instance, if they picked the traditional wedding between Mr and Mrs. Onyeomna, they could have elaborated it in such a way that they show their good works and how it led them to meeting eachother and finally getting married.

Also, the rich man’s scene, suicide scene, the sick lady’s scene all made sense, and it would have made more sense If they were the only stories in the video.

They Even forgot their conversation at the beginning of the video. The reason they were checking their phone was to pick any trending story for their video. The video could have ended in such a way that out of all the stories shown, they eventually picked one.

SOUND:

Quite tuneful. The constant use of the word “onyeoma” is surely one short catchy phrase that would easily be remembered by their fans. They were consistent in their vocals, they were not screechy at any point. It is an interesting vibe and may be misconstrued as a gospel song. Their vocal was partially appealing.

JUST WONDERING

  • I thought they said they were in Clarence Peter’s studio, the last time I checked, CP directs videos and not sell clothes, so what were those clothes doing in the studio, they are obviously not costumes because their intro makes us understand that they are yet to choose a concept for their video
  • So after going through what is happening on Instagram, why did they not choose one story to use
  • So many unnecessary scenes- the boy spraying his mum money was unnecessary, the three guys drinking was unnecessary, the scene that followed it is better.
  • Why did Olamide tap his hand at the beginning of the song like he was calling a dog, o ma ni igberaga gan ni sha
  • I don’t even understand those three guys that wanted money from the rich man, they were already wearing a different cloth, which looks like another day to me, but the rich man was still going around in one cloth, he should have changed attire.
  • They just wasted beat in the place where he announced that Phyno wanted girls to shake their behind- a decent choreography would have made sense there, so is it until girls shake their behind that they have danced.

REMARK

This song is a great tune, but the video has so many frivolities.
