MUSIC REVIEW: DUNCAN MIGHTY FT WIZKID – FAKE LOVE

There is a song by @Naeto-C and @WandeCoal titled “Ashawo”. In the song, they said “just because she dance like this doesn’t mean that u should diss, just because she dance like this doesn’t mean that u should tease and the way she boogie down, it makes the guys dey come around. I’m sure u wanna hit it too… hold your thoughts my brother. E no mean say the girl na ashawo”

I used to agree with the above lines of the song, but now, I don’t agree with it again.

For Christ sake, what does the above pictures have to do with the lyrics to the song “Fake love”. The girls were almost naked and were acting worst than strippers. This video just promoted lesbianism, prostitution; immorality in general.

Infact, if you listen Duncan Mighty’s verses, his lyrics were basically talking about real love, someone a person truly loves. He said if that person you love doesn’t stay with you when you are out of cash or in need, then the person is a fake lover who just wanted you for your money. Or if a lady loves you only when you have money, the lady in question is a fake girl and her love for you is fake.  Infact, him and Wizkid reiterated this in the chorus “Only fake girls be loving when you have eh eh, when e red, them tuwama when e red eh eh ehh

Whereas, Wizkid’s verses talked about love for a prostitute based on what he said here… ” Seh you go dey when body no dey oh? Seh you go dey for me if I no pay oh?” We know that when a woman is paid for her sexual services, she is no doubt a prostitute.

Now, if majority of the lines in the song was like that, we can then say this video properly fits the song.

The director of this song should have probably just associated those erotic visuals to Wizkid’s verses and give Duncan an unerotic visiuals; this doesn’t stop the video from being exotic.

We know video vixens are either upcoming actors or models, but it is high time video vixens started listening to lyrics of a song before performing in front of the camera so that they can properly think over the song and be able to properly think of the moves and costumes that would best suit the song they would be dancing to. As far as I am concerned this video has no correlation with the title. Anyway, that is by the way, let’s feel the lyrics to the song before the main review.

THE REVIEW

The song “Fake love” has a good intro beat. It is very impressive and capable of making someone that is moody to move his or her body.

Lyrically, the song comes in four verses with Duncan Mighty taking the lead. Duncan Mighty sang verses 1 and 3 while Wizkid sang verses 2 and 4. However, Duncan repeated verses 1 and 3 in the latter part of the song.

The song is quite long; there was really no reason for Duncan Mighty to have repeated two different verses again (Verses 1 and 3). The chorus was pretty cool.

In verse 1, Duncan talked about remaining the same way and still doing the same thing , if his significant order can keep loving him the way he is even if he doesn’t have money.  However the line is incomplete “I wanna be like this, if love can be like this. I wanna do like this, if love can be like this” Be like what or do like what? We have no idea…

In Verse 2, Wizkid talked about a lady still loving and staying with him if there is no money or body “Odoyewu, where you dey? Seh you go dey when money no dey oh?Seh you go dey when body no dey oh?”

However, the next line seemed conflicting with the first line “Seh you go dey for me if I no pay oh?” It makes it look like Wizkid is patronizing sex workers

In Verse 3, Duncan talked about the special lady in his life and how she drives him crazy “Oh no no! Star Boy, ogbawalam isi o (she is driving me crazy) nwoni why?”

In Verse 4 Wizkid professed his love for a lady and wished he could make her happy if only she allowed him to be his man.
The song was done in three different languages- English, Igbo, Rivers’ language, however 80% was sang in English. Though, Odoyewu is a Ghanaian word meaning “Love till death”

Also there were some words used by the artistes that definitely can’t be found in the dictionary but can be self- interpreted by the listeners from the meaning of the song. For instance, in the chorus, both artistes said “Tuwama” which may mean run away…

Finally, Duncan was more expressive lyrically than Wizkid.

WHAT DOES THE SONG “FAKE LOVE” BY WIZKID AND DUNCAN MIGHTY REALLY MEAN

It is a song directed to a lady who claims to love a man deeply but immediately vanishes when the man is in a financial mess or in deep need. Both artistes referred to such ladies as “Fake girls”. This they sang in the chorus ” Only fake girls be loving when you have, when e red, them tuwama when e red, when e red”

Fake love means love that is not genuine. According to them, fake girls would pretend to love you and stay with you when you have, but when you don’t have again, they would “tuwama”; that is run away.

Fake love in the context of this song means ladies  that only love guys when they are in abundance or for their material things or because of what they stand to gain, but when those things are no longer there, they stop loving the guy or run away.

COSTUME:

I love the Ankara concept, however, the scenes  where they wore a very transparent net without wearing their undies  was a wrong choice for a song like “Fake love”with an harmless lyrics . The girls were close to unclad. They were all dressed like strippers.

However, the men were fully dressed. The elderly men that were seen playing the instruments were all fully dressed in the Ankara fabrics. Both Wizkid and Duncan wore Jackets that covered their bodies but the ladies decided to be naked.

Just may be one day, an artiste would decide to be fair by making the males in the video to be unclad just like they make the ladies, including the artiste as well.

LOCATION

It was shot indoor; a bar precisely. It seems like it was also shot in the studio.

SOUND

Terrific! The intro beat is catchy. The beat is capable of making you move your body even if you don’t want to. Proper arrangement of rhythm, it really flowed well.. I also love their vocals, very appealing. Great delivery of lyrics and body movements by the men.

VIDEO

The video has been talked about in the opening line of this article, so I won’t dwell too much on it. The video is a wrong choice for song like this. It promotes lesbianism, prostitution among others. The ladies were dancing in erotic ways and were opening and raising sensitive parts of their body which can be seen as an invitation to the opposite sex for sex. They looked so desperate. I am very certain that those ladies went home sexed by someone, because after such video shoot, they can’t think right again, the only thing that would be on their mind is sex. Kindly refer back to the beginning of this article to read more about the video.

JUST WONDERING

They  (video vixens) were just exposing their body and dancing in an erotic way, what has that got to do with the content of the song?

I am wondering what they were thinking when they put those elderly men- seems Duncan Mighty had a different concept from Wizkid for this video. Wizkid probably wanted something erotic while Duncan wanted something unerotic. Also if you recall, Wizkid’s lyrics talked more about paying a girl for sex while Duncan’s talked about someone he wants to wife.

  1. Nice analysis however I think your interpretation on Wizkid’s lyrics and the video vixens is too extreme. He when says “Seh you go dey for me if I no pay oh?” he might also mean if she will be with him if he doesn’t pay as in spend money on her. This might be a stretch but it may have just been the phrase that seemed to rhyme with the flow of the song. Also, video vixens are just there to work so long as they agree to do the shoot. It’s not their job to analyze the lyrics and determine whether their role matches the concept. That is up to the music video director. So whether we agree with how they were dressed and preformed or not, unfortunately sex appeal sells in today’s society so that is why they were hired. I agree that it doesn’t match the lyrics and it is annoying when the men are all fully clothed compared to them but at the end of the day that is what the music director wanted and that was what they agreed to get paid for so that’s as far as it goes.
