SYNOPSIS
AFTER THE DEATH OF THE KING THAT RULED THE AFRICAN NATION OF WAKANDA- TCHAKA(ATANDWA KANI), HIS ONLY YOUNG SON T’CHALLA(CHADWICK BOSEMAN)IS SUMMONED BY THE TRIBAL ELDERS OF WAKANDA TO TAKE UP THE MANTLE OF LEADERSHIP AND BE THE NEXT KING OF THE NATION- WAKANDA. THE WAKANDAS HAVE ALWAYS LED WITHOUT ANYONE/TRIBE CHALLENGING THEIR LEADERSHIP. HOWEVER, T’CHALLA IS APPALLED WHEN SOMEONE FROM THE JEBARI TRIBE WANTS THE THRONE AS WELL AND HE IS MBAKU (WINSTON DUKE). T’CHALLA DEFEATS M’BAKU DURING THE CEREMONIAL CHALLENGE AFTER WHICH HE IS CROWNED KING AND GIVEN HERB TO DRINK; THE HERB GIVES HIM THE STRENGTH OF BLACK PANTHER AND LIKEWISE THE ABILITY TO DEFEAT HIS FOES.
MEANWHILE, THERE IS AN UNTOLD SECRET OF THE LATE KING- T’CHAKA, WHO UNINTENTIONALLY KILLED HIS YOUNGER BROTHER- N’JOBU (STERLING K BROWN)AND FLED ABANDONING HIS ONLY SON ERIK KILLMONGER(MICHAEL B JORDAN).
ERIK GROWS UP WITH THE PURSUIT FOR VENGEANCE IN MIND. KNOWING THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS FATHER’S DEATH, HE IS BENT ON SENDING THAT PERSON ALSO TO WHERE HE SENT HIS FATHER TO. THOUGH THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS FATHER’S DEATH IS DEAD, ERIK HOWEVER VOWS TO KILL HIS SON AS WELL -T’CHALLA NOT MINDING THAT THEY ARE RELATED. HE TRAVELS TO WAKANDA TO ACHIEVE THIS MISSION. THERE IS A CEREMONIAL CHALLENGE BETWEEN ERIK AND THE ALREADY CROWNED NEW KING- T’CHALLA.
BEFORE THE CHALLENGE, ERIK MAKES A CARICATURE OF T’CHALLA FOR HIS INABILITY TO DEFEAT THEIR ENEMY (ULYSSES) WHOM HE EVENTUALLY KILLED. DURING THE DUEL, ERIK DEFEATS T’CHALLA AND THROWS HIS BODY INSIDE WATER. WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN NEXT? FIND OUT IN THE PLOT
MOVIE PLOT
In the year 1992, King T’Chaka (Atandwa Kani) visits his brother Prince Njobu (Sterling K. Brown) who is working as undercover in Oakland, California. Prince Njobu is with his friend Zuri (Adult-Forest Whitaker; Young- Denzel Whitaker) T’chaka tells Zuri to leave the room that he wants to chat his brother, but Prince Njobu tells him that Zuri is his trusted friend that he should let him stay, oblivious that Zuri is also an undercover as well and has close and loyal friendship with his brother. King Tchaka tells Prince Njobu about the attack in the country by Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) who stole a quarter ton of vibranium from them. He tells Prince Njobu that Ulysses triggered a bomb at the border to escape which cost the lives of Wakandans. Tchaka at this moment tells his brother that Ulysses knew where they hid the vibranium and how to strike because he had someone on the inside leak the information.
The present day
A tourist attack leads to the death of Tchaka in the hands of Helmut Zemo who disguised as a masked James Barnes. Meanwhile, a call is being made to Tchaka’s son- Tchalla (Chadwick Boseman) to return home and assume the Wakanda throne.
Tchalla along wIth the leader of the female fighting force “Dora Milaje” – Okoye (Danai Gurira) go and bring Nakia (Llupita Nyong’o) from Sambisa forest in Nigeria who is doing an undercover job. Nakia is Tchalla’s former lover . T’challa and Nakia chat for a while and he tells her that his father is dead and he will be crowned king and wishes her presence in the ceremony. The others in sambisa forest are saved and are told not to tell anyone what they had seen
Nakia visits T’challa’s mum- Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and consoles her and her daughter- Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright)on the king’s death, the queen afterwards re unites with her son T’challa. They all go and prepare for the ceremony ahead. While princess shuri who is a technology expert, makes jest of his brother at how he might have shivered seeing his former lover Nakia again.
During the ceremony, the leader of the fifth tribe, the mountain dwelling Jabari- M’baku (Winston Duke) comes out to challenge him for the throne. Mbaku dares T’challa to fight him making a caricature of T’challa for his inability to safe his father, which makes M’baku feel he is incapable of leading the Wakandans. The two engage in a tough combat but T’Challa conquers him and spares his life.
In London, Late Njobu’s son- Erik Killmonger (ex-U.S. black ops soldier), and other gang led by Ulysses Klaue steal from a museum a Wakandan artefact
While receiving treatment from the wounds inflicted upon him by Mbaku during the fight, Tchalla falls into trance. He remembers his father and how he died in his hands. He asks his father(John Kani) how best to protect Wakanda, he tells him to surround himself with the people he trusts after which he wakes up
While the Wakanda elders gather to hold their meeting, they discover that a misidentified Wakanda Artifact is missing in a british museum. They also discover that Ulysses Klaue has re-surfaced and he plans on selling the vibranium to an American buyer in South Korea the next day.
Meanwhile, Tchalla’s younger sister- Shuri prepares him for the mission ahead where he intends to bring down Ulysses. She makes new technologies that will aid T’challa mission. T’challa tells Shuri that he would be going on the mission with Okoye and his former lover Nakia.
The trio comprising T’Challa, Okoye, and Nakia obstruct Ulysses Klaue at an underground casino in Busan where he is about selling the artifact, but Khlaue however suspects a set up. The buyer is CIA agent Everett Ross (Martin Freeman). Khlaue sensing trouble flees from them but they chase after until they finally apprehend him.
CIA agent Everett Ross questions Khlaue while in their custody on the reason he stole from Wakanda, and he reveals Wakanda’s secret to the CIA who thinks it is a fairy tale. He tells Everett that wakanda has mountain of vibraniums and that T’challa’a shoes, clothes are more are made of them. Everett goes to meet T’challa demanding to hear the truth about the vibranium from him. Just then, Erik Kilmonger (Michael B. Jordan) shows up saving Khlaue and shoots Tchalla. Also, the Everett takes a bullet meant for Nakia during the attack which makes them unable to continue the pursue. Everett is taken to Shuri who uses their technology to save his life.
W’kabe is full of anger that T’challa is unable to bring down Ulysses Klaue. Meanwhile killmonger kills Khlaue moments after saving him from the hands of T’challa. Knowing fully well how much the Wakanda’s want him dead, he takes his body to them.
Tchala goes to Zuri demanding to know the truth seeing. Reluctantly, Zuri tells Tchala the secret behind Prince Njobu’s death, letting him know that his father killed his brother and then abandoned his son- Erik. This saddens Tchala.
Shuri is able to heal Everett. When Everett wakes up, he is amazed at the wonders of Wakanda’s technology. Shuri tells him that she used the vibraniums to save him. Shortly after, Shuri receives a message from Okoye telling her that Erik has the body of their enemy- Ulysses klaue in his hands. She tells Shuri to try and reach T’challa her brother as she is unable to reach him. Shuri is able to reach Tchala and tells him he is needed urgently. Meanwhile Tchala is with his former lover Nakia. He tells her how displeased he is with his father’s past for killing his brother and concealing it. More displeasing to him is that he abandoned the son. Nakia advises him and tells him not to let his father’s mistakes define who he is.
While the tribal elders are in a meeting, Erik shows face and tells them he wants the throne. They rebuke his words as well as King T’challa who later orders his men to throw him out, but Erik reveals his identity and they all appalled. He tells them that he has the right to the throne. T’challa accepts the challenge
T’challa and Erik are about to start the challenge, however, T’challa tries to make peace with Erik but he turns it down letting him know that he has always wanted to kill him.
Nakia goes to meet Okoye and pleads with her to dethrone Erik but okoye tells her that she is loyal to the one who seats on the throne
Erik drinks the herb that gives him the powers of the Black Panther. He falls into trance and remembers his father. He remembers his father regretting not taking him back home to Wakanda.
While in a meeting with the tribal elders, Erik tells them that they should be known as conquerors but Okoye tells him that Wakanda only fights when necessary. Erik plans to execute his father’s plan to ship Wakanda’s weapons and distribute to Wakandan operatives around the world.
Queen Ramonda, Nakia, Shuri, Everett flee from their place and go and see Jabari king- Mbaku to tell him what had befallen T’challa. Mbaku without mincing words says T’challa has been defeated. They tell him that an outsider is on their thrown and they need him to to stop him for them. Mbaku leads them to a room where they are stunned to find Tchalla’s body. He tells them that his fishermen found him at the edge of the river border. T’challa is kept in snow as this keeps him still alive and prevents him from joining the ancestors.
Queen Romanda collects the herb from Nakia. She calls upon the ancestos to heal her son after which she gives him the herb to drink. T’challa falls into trance and sees his father who tells him to join him in his world. He asks his father why he didn’t bring the Erik home and he replies that he chose the truth. T’challa tells him he can’t stay with him. He says he must take the mantle back and then wakes up afterwards. His family are happy.
T’challa fully alive and healthy seeks help from Jabari leader- M’baku but he turns him down. T’Challa returns to Wakanda to fight Erik in order to get back the throne. But Erik tells him that he is now the king and there is no challende again. However Okoye lets him know that the challenge is not over since he is still alive. Soon, Okoye and the Dora Milaje turn against him telling him that he is not fit to be a king because his heart is full of hatred.
There is a long battle but T’challa eventually conquers Erik. He stabs him in the chest. T’challa however tries to save him but Erik prefers to join his ancestors as he says he is not ready to go to prison. He pulls the dagger out of his chest and dies.
T’challa thanks nakia for saving him and his family and then kisses her afterwards. He pleads with her to stay which stipulates that he wants her back in his life. T’challa buys the building his dad killed his brother Njobu and other buildings and turns it into the first Wakanda Outreach center.
